I have bought 2x8GB KVR16s11/8 RAM, Originally It came with 1x4GB, the motherboard supports up to 16GB of Ram, when I insert both of them the Laptop slows down dramatically and the startup time is over 3Mins but if I insert only the 1x8GB Ram in slot B (The lower slot) it’s as fast as hell, it starts up in 39 secs and everything else is running very smoothly.

If I insert the exact same Ram module in slot A (the upper slot) it’s again very slow at startup and everything else is pretty slow.

I thought that slot A for some reason is defect, but then again if I insert the original 4GB by itself in Slot A it works just fine.

I have also checked the CAS Latency and they are all the same 11,10,9,8,7,6 on the 2X8GB and the 1x4GB.

It’s my second time to upgrade RAM and all these timings and latency and all these technical abbreviations are new to me and all I know is that I can over clock the RAM modules, but I have no idea what to do as the timings are identical???

Are the slots or memory controller out of sync somehow??

I really need your advice on this one...

Don't know if this will make any difference but here are the Specifications:
Processor i5 3210M
HDD 750GB 7200RPM
Intel R HD 4000/ Nvidia 610 1GB Dedicated

In advance thanks.

Hello,

I'm sorry to say this but your system supports only upto 8GB of memory. That's the reason your system works fine with 8GB of memory and not 16GB. You can confirm it here. Also it seems Lenovo itself is confused about this... http://www.lenovo.com/shop/emea/content/pdf/Essential/GSeries/en/essential-g580-datasheet.pdf

Check the above pdf link - In the first page under Key specifications you can find it mentioned as "upto 8GB" but in the second page it is mentioned as 16GB (but the memory config doesn't anything about 2x8GB instead it is mentioned only as 1x2GB / 2x2GB / 1x4GB /1x2GB+1x4GB / 2x4GB ). Bottomline: Max is 8GB only.

Cheers!!

Thanks for your reply, appreciate it alot.

I can see what you are saying about Lenovo's mixed messages.

But this still doesnt explain why slot A (upper Ram slot) isnt working like slot B because as mentioned before "when i use the same Ram Module and change its place from slot B (lower Ram slot) to Slot A it effects the entire laptop performance as when inserting the 2x8GB".

Whats even more confusing is that it shows in aida64 that it supports up to 16GB, one of the things that could be the reason why the 2x8GB as well as slot A only supporting the 4GB Ram is that Lenovo like many other manufactures has locked the bios/motherboard, and somehow its rejecting the 2x8Gb and the 1x8Gb in slot A, and the 1x8Gb works like a dream on slot B.

But anyways maybe 8GB is more than enough for this laptop, but it would still be great if someone has an explanation for this weird behaviour of my Crazy laptop.

Thanks once again Legohouse and have a great day/evening whereve you are ;-)

I have no issues with KVR16S11/8.
My G580 (20150) came with 1 stick of 4GB Samsung memory card (M471B5273DH0-CK0, PC3-12800S-11-11-F3, suppors both 1.35V and 1.5V).

Succesful case.
I've bought 2 pieces of KINGSTON KVR16S11/8 DDR3 (PC3-12800 CL11 1.5V). Which works great in all combinations:
- both slots are Kingston 8GB
- Kingston 8GB + empty slot
- Kingston 8GB + Samsung 4GB

Unsuccessful case.

Before Kingston I had tried the "CRUCIAL CT102464BF160B DDR3L 8Гб 1600, 204 pin SO-DIMM", which were working only with the original memory card inserted (1st slot is original Samsung 4GB and 2nd slot is Crucial 8GB). It was not working without the original Samsung stick: neither 1slot is Crucial 8GB + 1slot empty, nor both slots are Crucial 8GB.
Crucial is 1.35V (which is low voltage - letter "L" in DDR3L). And Crucial website states it compatible with G580. However it is compatible only if you leave 1 slot with original memory stick.
