I want to get a new gtx 970 for my pc without needing to buy an entirely new setup, in order to be able to run next gen games seeing how my gts 450 has aged. However I was struck with the realization that my motherboard is extremely sub par - or even worse - perhaps incompatible with the card. Psu is fine seeing the idle load of both the gts450 and gtx970 is around 150 watts, but I just wanted to check if it's worth it to only upgrade the gpu or just save up and get an entirely new system all together.

  • i5 760 quadcore cpu @~3ghz
4gb ram ( will upgrade to 8 for sure )
    geforce gts 450 gpu
    asus p7p55d-e motherboard

thanks in advance

For the price, a gtx 770 is about an unbeatable deal. It'll play almost any current game at high-ultra settings at 1080p. Paired with a good 550w+ psu it'll hold you till at least you are ready to retire your current pc and start over.

A small OC to 3.4+ would help
