So I took apart my r9 290, water blocks arriving on Friday and when I was cleaning the thermal paste from the GPU, I got some on the tiny studs around it. Am I going to have to clean it meticulously or am I fine?

Depends on what it is ....

Shin Etsi, Gelid = OK
Artic Silver = Uh Oh
Collaborative Liquid = Yikes ! It's liquid metal, might as well be solder

http://www.arcticsilver.com/as5.htm

Quote:
Not Electrically Conductive:
Arctic Silver 5 was formulated to conduct heat, not electricity.
(While much safer than electrically conductive silver and copper greases, Arctic Silver 5 should be kept away from electrical traces, pins, and leads. While it is not electrically conductive, the compound is very slightly capacitive and could potentially cause problems if it bridges two close-proximity electrical paths.)

You can leave as is and keep worrying about it or clean it 100% - your choice.

If you want to remove every trace of it go to the auto parts store and get a spray can of CRC QD Electronic Component Cleaner, take it outside the home to clean it, follow the cautions, it is flammable, and don't breathe it, it will not harm the substrate cleans in seconds and dries extremely fast, I always keep a can on the shelf now for just such a problem.

This is what the can looks like.
