Very annoying problem that's been persisting for a week or so.

So, I have Windows 8.1, and have had it for quite a while.

One day, I booted up my PC after a restart and got a black screen with a little window saying something about personalized settings, it sat there for about 10 minutes then finally booted to desktop.

Since then, File Explorer has been really slow, I can no longer open properties, and windows refresh doesn't work at all.

I've done SFC scans, and they find corrupt files that cannot be fixed.

I've been on the internet since, trying to figure out how to fix this, with no luck at all.

Anyone able to shed some light? Or will I have to completely restore windows? (Which I don't want to do because I'll lose my 500GB worth of Anime & Games

First thing I would do - backup all of your data to another hard drive or computer.

Second - run a hard drive diagnostic from the manufacturer of the hard drive (their website should have a free download).

If there are errors on the drive - your drive is probably having problems and should be replaced. If there are no errors, it could have been from improperly shutting down the PC (power outage, computer crash, etc). In this case - you may have to reload Windows.

Windows 8.1 is a solid & fast OS. The two big issues have been with drivers (manufacturers of the equipment aren't writing device drivers) and the metro interface (Start8 fixes that problem). Virtually everyone that says, "Windows 8 Sucks" either has never installed it or installed it and removed it within a few days....those who have used it know better....

Sorry but now that I'm used to 8.1, I vastly prefer it to Windows 7. Windows 8.1 has been my favourite OS since it's launch.

I managed to fix the issue. I got my ISO and re-ran the setup, said to keep all files and it re-installed windows. Not had a problem with it since.
