So I am planning on getting the intel i5 4790k and I have a mobo in mind but apparently I would have to install a bios update for the msi z87 g45 gaming motherboard. Is it difficult to install the update? Should I get a different mobo and if so which one on about the same price range

No it's fairly easy to install the BIOS update. All you need is a USB with the update file. Plug and play.

However the motherboard might not recognize the 4790k, meaning you would need an older haswell, not haswell refresh, cpu just to boot to the BIOS. Unless the board is shipped with the latest BIOS.

You wouldn't have to worry about compatibility issues if you went with a Z97 motherboard.

What price range are you looking at? Do you plan to sli or crossfire later on?

If you have to install the bios update to make the motherboard compatible with your processor then you would have to contact MSI and ask them to send you an updated BIOS IC (chip). I just checked and it seems that the motherboard in question does not use a socket for the BIOS IC therefore that is not an option. It looks as though it states it supports your processor from BIOS version 1.7 and up. If the motherboard doesn't come with that version or higher preinstalled then you will not be capable of running your processor with that motherboard without first updating the BIOS with a supported Haswell processor installed.

If the motherboard is just running a previous BIOS build (1.7 or higher) and you want to keep it current then it's as easy as downloading the BIOS update from MSI's website, placing it onto a flash drive, entering the BIOS and selecting the flash BIOS option and selecting the flash drive it's stored on.

I hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions.
