How much does the memory speed matter, and how much can i alter this?

Hey,

I've noticed on the RAM i've been interested in, the CPUs and the motherboards it usually lists a speed, like 2133 for example. I was interested in how much this actually matters to operations in photoshop for example.

later in the year i intend to get a nice high end system to put together and its going to have to do a lot of photoshop work and also high end gaming, thanks to my motherboard choice it has to be DDR4 ram which is quite expensive. Should i be getting 16gb or 32gb? (if this was DDR3 i would guaranteed get 32 gb but the price is very steep for 32gb of DDR4 at even the cheapest stores that ive personally seen, for an unknown amount of real benefit, as ive never even had 16gb of ram before to make a comparison), and as well as that, which speed?

the two motherboards i'm really deciding between are the UD-gaming-5 gigabyte, and the ASUS ROG V extreme. the CPU is almost guaranteed to be the i-7 5820k if that matters.

Also, how easy is overclocking memory, and how worth it is it? as i am very inexpereinced at overclocking but very interested in trying it, i'd love to try overclocking the memory if it's not too hard.

thanks in advance, i've gotten some real helpful replies on this website :D

For editing,it usually goes: "Higher freq RAM=faster editing, more RAM=better editing".
16GB is enough both for gaming and editing.Get some 2666 or 2800 MHz 4x4GB RAM,that would be your best option.
For the MoBo,I would suggest the Gigabyte-X99-UD4,and for the CPU,the i7 5930K.
Overclocking isn't hard, you just gotta do it once and then it's easy. There are plenty of guides on the net and YouTube that show DDR4 overclocking(which isn't different that DDR3 overclocking).

Hi there,

Memory speed certainly matters but for example in games it won't be noticeable if it is 1866 or 2133, actually for gaming 1600Mhz is the sweet spot.

32 GB of ram is overkill basically for anything right now. 16 is more than enough now for photoshopping or video editing, for gaming even 8 is more than enough.

And yes everything is really expensive right now that is connected to x99. The mobo, the cpu, the memory... Honestly I don't see why do you want to make the jump for it, there is simply no point in it yet. A z97 system will be still high end 3 years from now. And then you can upgrade it when x99 prices come down from the heavens :) But it's just my opinion obviously.

hey ghost, (im glad i got to reply without the 404 error this time!)

i'm quite inexperienced in all of this area, but have a fair bit of money to throw around, so mostly this tends to be me picking the most recent option and saying "that one, that one is the best, ill buy that one". Posting some threads here are a lot more helpful than basing it off my own knowledge.

What would your reccomendation be, with the z97 system? Would it be the i-7 4790k along with a very high end GPU like a GTX 980? Maximising the performance of the system is something i'd love to do, as i want it to be really high end

I understand. And yes obviously if you got the money and want the best of the best you can buy a x99 config. Only I think it's still a waste of money because you won't be able to fully utilize it for quite some time.

And yeah, I would buy the config you listed. It will be enough for you for years to come, about that I'm sure. I'm also sure that you can find something to spend the extra money :) For example if really heavy photoshopping is the goal, then a good ips monitor is surely a good invesment.
