I'm from India and prices here are very high on gfx cards of any type. I have been saving for ASUS R9 280 and planning on buying it from a local retailer available at Rs 17,110 (277 USD).
Unfortunately all the R9 280s have been sold out in my area, except a Sapphire R9 280X which he is selling me for Rs 21,500 (350 USD). I'm skeptical about buying it since I have heard many reports and complaints
about R9 280X and R9 290X models, especially Sapphire ones. Some of reports that I read, mentioned that card stopped working after 2-3 days, or it never worked and had to RMA it over and over. Also there have been reports of screen flickering in 2D mode i.e. when running desktop or browsing internet on Chrome etc. All of these have been recent within this month.

The other gfx cards he have are R9 270 and a GTX 760. My problem with these gfx cards is that they have 2GB of graphics memory and somewhat mediocre gpus. While I am planning to play upcoming games like
COD : Advanced Warfare, Witcher 3 all maxxed out and Skyrim with as many texture mods and ENBs all at 1080p. So...

What can I do about my situation? I also enquired about GTX 970 and he (retailer) said that he can import it and it will cost me Rs 29,000 (470 USD). I have money for R9 280X but honestly I find spending more than Rs 20,000 for gfx card ridiculous. So what should I do? What can I do?

The only thing I'm worried about is spending money on Sapphire R9 280X and having to go through headache of replacing it.
The reason I'm worried is - 'Diwali' (festival of lights in India; as they say it) holidays are next week and I plan on gaming on my PC with sweet power of a new gfx card (well, my first gfx card). I'm a medical student and I rarely get this much free time. That's why I am so eager not to ruin my holidays due to a faulty gfx card and having to replace it, instead of gaming comfortably at home. I have to make a decision and make it right and fast.

Why don't you order it online? http://www.flipkart.com/msi-amd-r9-280-gaming-3-gb-gddr...

I second the power supply swap also, you want something from the first 2 tiers, maybe the 3rd one is OK but you'd want to get a slightly higher power PSU from that than you need. http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/id-1804779/power-supp...

Flipkart sucks, that's why I didn't order from there. Worst product delivery process, you mostly get stuff/model that you didn't place order for, or if you do get right one its damaged due to negligence; like expensive hardware packed only in bubble wrap when it arrives. And 'refund' process is pain in the a**. They frustrate and wear you down until you leave or die.
Its worse than buying locally from a computer shop at hiked prices.

I don't know what you're talking about, mine works perfectly. My precioussss....  Do you know I polish the plastic shroud from time to time? Hehehe just kidding, but I do like to clean it thoroughly!

Since they cannot procure the R9 280X that you want, demand a discount or threaten to buy somewhere else. That should get their attention.

Saphire is as goo of a brand as any. There are failed card out there for any brand and model, unless it's something overwhelmingly bad, you will never find a card that is 100% good for everyone. Just because you read that 3 people had issues with a card does not mean that it's bad. The other 10,000 that bought it are just fine.
