Windows 7 won't recognise my mouse and keyboard after an update

After windows 7 64bit updated it will no longer recognise my keyboard or mouse.
They both light up on start up and I can get into the bios settings fine where they both work as they should. As soon as windows loads up I lose both

I've also tried a usb to ps/2 adapter which stopped them both working completely

The pc is a 10 month old custom build with no problems until now. Stupidly I had been running it on 32bit (limiting the speed of my build)
I clean installed 64 bit yesterday and it worked fine until it updated.

Any suggestions on how to fix this?

Solution
Try different mouse/keyboard.

1. PC specs
2. Have you tried different USB port?
3. Check the Event Viewer it might have recorded any problems with your USB.

As a last resort:
4. Assuming that there really is an update which is preventing them from working, all you have to do is:
- Control Panel
- Programs and Features
- View Installed Updates and uninstall them one by one to see which update is causing the issue (Ofcourse, you can update it back to how it while leaving out the update which caused the issue).

To avoid having to uninstall ALL updates (I assume there will be a lot) leave out the:
-NET framework
-Office (if you have any)

Focus on Microsoft Windows updates.
I should point out that this is...

Edit:
I forgot to mention, try Safe Mode

I'm having the same problem, and it has nothing to do with USB... the built-in keyboard and touchpad stop working as soon as Windows loads, even in Safe Mode. Everything is fine in BIOS or the Windows "selection" screen (i.e., I can choose to boot to Safe Mode) but as soon as ANY configuration of Windows starts up, they both stop working. USB mouse and keyboard also fail. I know it's the SP1 update that kills them, because I have now done a fresh install TWICE and everything is perfect until that update is installed. I would just skip it, but it's for a customer (I'm an IT professional) who may - intentionally or not - install the update down the road, and I'd rather have the issue fixed before I send it home with him.
