Hi All

I currently have two GTX 770 2Gb in SLI. I get varying FPS results depending on the game I'm playing (from sublime to ridiculous), and was wondering if it might be worth getting the AMD R9 290X (which I can now get for £260) as a replacement.

I'm thinking that the additional vram will be beneficial (especially with games becoming more vram hungry) and having a single card will eliminate some of the issues I get with games that seem to dislike SLI.

Any opinions will be gratefully received.

You will downgrade your GPU,not upgrade.GTX 770 SLI is 15% more stronger(according to my research).

you would definitely downgrade.. i would suggest you sell both cards and put it with the money you were gonna use buy the 290x and get a gtx 970 or a single gtx 980 for best performance all around the table ..

Still a downgrade(770 SLI is about 7-10% more powerful).

What I'm saying @chrisevry is to stick with your setup(GTX 770 SLI),because it can max out pretty much any game.

it wouldnt be a downgrade because not every game take advantage of both gpus so a single powerful gtx 980 or 970 would be a much better pick for him .. those cards can do just as well as the 770 in sli ... get a single card its best and you can get another in the future and then you would be at a better point

If you look at the manufacturer's own ranges, an R9 290X sits at the top (just behind the 2905X2) whilst the GTX 770 is mid-range, so I don't think it's a downgrade at all. Gaming performance entirely depends on the game in question as some favour Nvidia cards and others favour AMD cards.

I'm one of those who prefer a single strong GPU over a Crossfire/SLI configuration, for the simple reason that not all games play nicely with it. You're entirely dependent on the developer supporting Crossfire, and if they don't, tough luck.

Instead of an R9 290X, I'd suggest a GTX 970.

Hmmm interesting. thanks chaps.

So is the GTX 970 more powerful than the R9 290x? That card was £550 til a few months ago and the GTX 970 is hitting the market at about £300......

The general consesus is that the GTX 970 offers the best price/performance ratio in the Nvidia range. A GTX 980 may get you a few more frames, but it's almost twice as expensive and not worth it. You could sell both GTX 770s, buy a GTX 970 and probably have cash to spare.

Looks like I'll go for the GTX 970 then. Cheers all.

Probably a good to stick with GTX as am hoping to get a 27 inch V-Sync Monitor for Christmas too.....

Happy days
