Hey! I was looking at the Nvidia Shield, and I have a single question. I have Half Life 2 on PC, so do I have to buy it again to have it install as the app? The same with portal 2. Any advice would be much appreciated!
Thanks in advance.

Yes and no.

Yes: If you want to play it whenever and wherever you want.

No: You can just stream it from your pc.

Unfortunately you and alot of others are getting 'glossed over' by the SALES PITCH, because the truth of the STEAM / SHIELD devices is alot of FALSE wishful thinking. So let's nip this in the bud and hopefully make this a permanent post.

1) THERE IS NO 'CONSOLE' for PCs.
2) These devices (STEAMBOX and NVIDIA SHIELD) are NOT WINDOWS devices. Steambox runs Linux, Nvidia Shield runs Android (YES YOUR CELLPHONE / TABLET software!!)
3) THESE devices ALWAYS need you to ALREADY HAVE A GAMING PC to 'STREAM' a game FROM. When they mean 'game anywhere' http://shield.nvidia.com/portable-game-player/ http://shield.nvidia.com/gaming-tablet/ they mean around your HOME streaming from your gaming PC over your wifi to the device (Steambox or Nvidia Shield).
4) There are only a HANDFUL of games available for either device that run 'natively' (aka take the SteamBox/Shield in the car, on a plane, etc. with NO WIFI and 'play' a game). Basically the games will be the SAME ONES as your Android Phone / Tablet.
>>> As seen on the link it is a SEPARATE PURCHASE item you would pay for ONLY works on the Shield, unless you had a TABLET / PHONE with the same hardware as the Shield (* NVIDIA Tegra® 4 mobile processor), then it may play on that too.
5) Your WASTING money in honesty. Calculate it this way:
A) Average PC Gaming system that can support that Steambox/Shield $1200 est. (entire system including OS)
((To 'make it look like the video' PC Gaming system would be no less then $1500 more $2000 to get the FPS correct))
B) Buy the Steambox / Shield + $ 200 - 799 depending on model
C) Buying BOTH HL2 and Portal (NOT Portal 2) for PC to 'stream' + $ 20 est. per Steam
D) Natively run HL2 and Portal (for when NOT at home) + $ 20+? pricing only accessible through Shield Device
E) Hardware changes

Verses: PS4 $400 + Vita $300 and use http://www.playstation.com/en-us/explore/psnow/ PS Now streaming to play ANY game you have on your PSN account regardless of it being a PS4 or Vita (aka pay one time for a game) as long as you have " a steady internet connection between 5-12Mbps". Otherwise simply run the LARGE library of games available for Vita you purchase seperately.

To me this seems like a no brainer, as Sony obviously made it more cost effective and easier (no techie things) for Joe / Jane Consumer. Steambox/Nvidia Shield is a dead end because they have (natively) NO GAMES 'out there' as compared to Windows, Xbox, Playstation.

So... the truth comes out... if my computer is sleeping, can i tap steam and open a game, and have it turn on my pc, open steam, and launch the app? Im just wondering how this works. It seems like a useful device, but there isn't much info out on it. Please answer me?

Not likely, you would have to keep your PC in the state of having the stuff ready to 'launch' all the time. That means steam open, the computer AWAKE, and you have to have the game launched on your PC to then 'stream' it to your device. NO there is no 'click on my portable device and it controls my PC completely' thing. As I said it is a marketing gimmick that is only going to be 'useful' if you just have ALOT of money to waste (see the prices I shown) in comparison to other options out there.

I mean a Lambo is a awesome car, but really on LA highways during most hours of the day and night, you still will only go 10-15mph with all the traffic. Yeah it has alot of nice features and bells and whistles, but so does that Prius sitting next to it though not as costly.

So you are saying that I have to have the game running on my pc, then it streams? So if I wanted a different game, I would have to go back to my pc, close it, then re-open another game then I stream it again? If so, thats really, REALLY dumb.

No, that is a way to allow you (case of Steambox) to NOT be stuck at the desk in one room, and able to play with a 'controller' on your 4K 47" LCD you have in your living room. In the case of the Shield it lets you walk around playing the titles, in your hands, without being tied to the LCD nor the desktop. So you can walk around and play in ANY room.

If you think that is unrealistic, how often we see people walking around 'texting' inside their house? From one room to another and back again? Now replace that phone with the Shield.

So what you are saying is that this is basically a pc on the go, as in I can download games like portal 2 and half life onto it and i can take that in the car and where there is no wifi, and if I am at home, then i can go and game where I have wifi. All i have to do is change the game, then i can take it from there? If these are all true, just say yes.

Almost. NO PORTAL 2, only Portal. Second to that ONLY the games available on the built in service (like Google Apps) which is limited (Angry Birds? FarmVille? Bejewelled?) that you can "download" just like any other 'Tablet' or Android Phone. It will be LIMITED to how much storage you have in it of course. Go back to the links on the Shield devices, look at the IMAGES on the 'devices' those give you the idea (I see only about 5 or 6 they claim 100s, but then again I know on Google Play there is '100s" of games but NOT the sort you beeen asking for).
