Hi

I am looking for a solution that will stream from my PC to a HDMI stick.
I want to watch videos I have on my PC and just push them to my TV.

Not looking for something USB based since my TV has no USB reader functionality
Not looking for Chromecast, since its designed for non-local content

There are plenty of players out there but am surprised at how they all focus on streaming internet content and whilst some may/may not also stream local content, its a minefield figuring out if they do or don't and contradictory information as to what and how.

Looking for it being UK available to buy

Also, ideally something that isn't mega expensive

Any ideas?

Yes, 100%
I don't mind having a terminal at the PC side or if it is done via WiFi, anything that can reliably transmit a signal between floors from bedroom (PC loc) to lounge (TV loc) and the receiver can be as big or small as available, as long as its HDMI connectivity

You are mistaken about Chromecast BTW.

First off, you don't use a USB reader for it, it actually pipes it through the HDMI interface, the USB is to power the device, which can be a simple 'cell phone' charger (same USB plug).

Second, you can play anything on your PC to the Chromecast, it isn't just for 'web based' content. Simply OPEN the file in your Chrome Web Browser (for example Movie.MPG) and it will 'play' in the Brower's Window, you then select the GoogleCast icon from the toolbar and you are "stream from my PC to a HDMI stick". I was gifted with one and I have done this with the movies I had on my local drive.

At what point did I say Chromecast used USB?
The only reference I make for Chromecast is that it is designed for online not local content. I also have done extensive research on it so little point in recommending Chromecast to me as I am looking for alternatives

I am aware you can play content via Chrome (load a move into the chrome browser) however I also know that a lot of people report poor performance since it isn't designed for it.

I am glad that I have a positive review for Chromecast amongst the others I am looking at, I am end up getting a chromecast but as I said above, this wasn't the purpose of my request, since I want to look for a specific line of alternatives.

Anyone else able to offer any please?

Well the complicated method would be to SHARE the folder from your PC using something like MediaMoneky, Media JukeBox, iTunes, etc. out there (it is a feature in most just not talked about much these days) and then have your Blu-Ray, Playstation, Xbox, etc. device you already have connected to the computer enabled to look for shared resources.

If you enter in your Orb/Start "Media Streaming Options" it will provide a panel to set the streaming from that computer usually through a HomeGroup. As noted under the 'Tell me more about media streaming'

Stream your media to devices and computers using Windows Media Player

If you have a home network, you can use Windows Media Player to stream media to computers and media devices in your home. For example, if you have a networked digital media receiver connected to your home stereo system, you can use Windows Media Player to stream music, pictures, and videos from your computer to your stereo. This allows you to enjoy the contents of your Player Library anywhere in your home—even in rooms that don't have a computer.

The following procedures explain how to get started. For an overview about streaming media, including information about device and network requirements, see Getting started with media streaming.

The trouble and trick is
A) security, if you have Windows Firewall enabled it will normally block access to your computer thus you can't share to others
B) if your wifi has wifi isolation set this can block seeing other devices on the network
C) If you do NOT have a 802.11N or AC network, then your subject to issues with the speed and throughput of the stream
D) How many other and TYPE of other devices on this network. If you have many others also doing 'things' even as simply as your Cell Phones which may be updating the apps can impact the speed and quality your streaming. Further if they are older devices, using 802.11G, that will dumb down the network to the 'lowest common denominator' and impact again the speed and quality used.
E) having to configure your QoS - Quality of Service not only on the Router but all other parts so that the streams get FIRST priority over say someone checking Email, or uploading a Business report.

Just all off the top of my head that does " a lot of people report poor performance" as the REAL culprits for ANY solution you use (file sharing, Chromecast, etc.)
