So I'm working on a server which has a Tyan S2937 motherboard, and 2 CPUs. I have a drive bay capable of supporting 6 drives, and the motherboard has 6 SATA connectors.
I want to setup the system with 3 drives. So, I have 3 500GB SATA Seagate Barracudas. I insert the 3 drives into drivebay 1, 2 and 3 respectively. I then hook up all 3 of them to the motherboard via the SATA cables.
When I boot up I enter the BIOS setup. For some reason, only the drives in bays 1 and 2 are detected. The drive in bay 3 is not detected, and in fact the blue LED powerlight on that 3rd drive bay does not even turn on when I power on the server.
So now I'm trying to troubleshoot this. My first thought was perhaps the power supply cannot handle 3 drives - but the server has a 600W power supply, which should be more than enough. I double-checked using an online PSU calculator and the requirements came out to well below 600W.
So I tried all the usual things:
(1) Assuming the 3rd drive might simply be bad, I inserted a different drive (the same model and size) into bay 3. The system still didn't detect it.
(2) I tried a different SATA cable. Still nothing.
I'm pretty much out of ideas here.
Can anyone suggest some other troubleshooting tips for determining why the 3rd drive isn't detected?
