This is an ethernet cable right?

Got it plugged into my computer with the other end in a socket in the wall at uni but Windows still claims there's a 'Network cable unplugged'. I get zero reaction from it being plugged in.

More about : ethernet cable

It is a lan cable so it is your setup that is not recognizing it or your wall socket.

It would appear to be so. Maybe check your drivers? Same thing has happened to me and i had to uninstill/reinstall drivers

Take a picture of the socket and the where it's connected on the back of the computer.

Connected to an on-board ethernet port.

Uninstall, reinstalled new ones from my motherboard manufacturers website, etc. to no avail.

Does an active WiFi connection have any effect on that port? I don't see why it would.

My guess is that the socket in the wall literally has no connection running from it anymore?

Doesn't have to be from ebay, check to see if someone you know has it, so you don't have to buy it yourself and borrow it from them.

Also is this the first time you have ever connected anything to that port in the wall?

The RJ-45 LAN port on your motherboard has two status LEDs. One is a Connection/Speed LED and the other is the Activity LED.

Consult your motherboard manual on its operation.

If the other end of the LAN drop from your wall to the wiring closet isn't connected to a switch or router then you won't see any of the LEDs lit on the RJ-45 LAN port on your motherboard.

Is the proper device driver for the motherboard's LAN controller installed?
