Hey everybody, my sister is heading off to college soon, and just broke her old HP Pavillion DV6. There was a CPU failure, so there was no way to get the data off. So, are there any Laptop recommendations, or ways to get the data off her drive? I'm pretty good with computers, i have taken out the HDD, but I do need an adapter. I have posted on Tom's Hardware before, but I could not find the "laptop Buying" form or whatever its called. Help is greatly appreaciated. I do have a Desktop/Tower to hook the drive in, but I couldn't find an adapter

put the old hard drive in a USB enclosure and then plug into your desktop. you should be able to get the data off.

as for laptop recommendations, I suggest sticking to big names as your sister heads off to college without family tech support (that's you)

for $600, you're probably looking at a core i5-4210 or something similar. There are a pretty wide variety of laptops at that price. If you can wait about a month, black friday season (I assume you're in the US) will offer a lot of good laptop deals. You might be able to move up to Core i7 for $600.

Well, she is going into aviation, so she won't need anything really fancy, and I do like the idea of waiting until black friday. She does like music, so she will need at least(hopefully) a terabyte of storage. After i get the data off her old HDD, is it safe to wipe it, and re-use it without damaging it?

Yes it should be safe to wipe the hard drive. I would wait until black friday and get the best deal as she doesn't need much power. I would go for a laptop with 4 gigs of ram and i5 ulv cpu. I am sure igp should be ok.

is she going to use the laptop for FlightSimulatorX? that requires a great deal of GPU power. Just a thought.
