I just upgraded to 8.1 and it keeps telling me that i have no ethernet cable plugged in which i do. The ethernet cable LED is on, and it works on other computers so it's not the cables problem. Someone please help this is so annoying. I tried updating the drivers, doesn't give me the rollback option.

There is also something funny when i went into device manager, it had 2 controllers in "other devices" That i guess weren't installed. They are "Ethernet Controller" and "SM Bus Controller"
My current network adapter is TAP-windows adapter v9.

I would like to add that i dont have a direct cable to to modem/router. I use this 2 piece transmitter that i plug to and outlet, one that connects to the modem and one thats connects to my pc. I use this because this was a custom built PC and the mb did not have wireless.

Your Ethernet drivers are not installed. "Ethernet Controller" just says that Windows has detected an Ethernet adapter, but doesn't know how to use it. Your computer's motherboard drivers CD should have the necessary driver you need, or at least give you an idea of what you need.

beautiful. thank you so much for the quick reply. quickly found my motherboard disk and installed all my drivers again. I did not know that after an update it would remove all these drivers. thank you so much once again
