I want to install windows 8 on my pc, I currently have XP installed on it. I know I cant upgrade directly from XP to 8 without a disc ( i have a key for 8). MIcrosoft offer a way to upgrade form their website, but the tool they offer doesn't run on xp, If I were to download the tool onto my Windows 8 laptop enter my product key and download 8 is there a way I can create a medium so that copy of 8 can be installed on my PC?

Better make sure there are drivers for your hardware for Windows 8. If you are using XP im guessing its a bit on the older side, may not be able to even use 8.

Depending on where you obtained the key for Win8, probably.
Run the upgrade tool, on a Win 7 or 8 device of the same bit level (64bit or 32bit) you want on the new PC.
It will ask early in the process "Install now" or "Install with media"
The "Media" option allows you create an install DVD.

use the tool you mentioned on your current windows 8 machine and when it prompts you tell it to download an .iso file. You can then create a bootable USB drive with the .iso file of windows to install on your new machine.

Just a fyi: The tool from microsoft to download the .iso will give you a 32bit or 64bit copy depending on the host machine you are using, so if your current windows 8 machine is 64bit that is the version of the .iso the tool will produce for you.

I recommend poweriso to create a bootable USB btw.

I did this on my 64bit laptop, I entered my product key and it started downloading. I was never given the option to install with media

It also depends on what you actually bought. If it was an 'upgrade' license, maybe not.

Found a Solution, I found a Windows 7 disc I got from the University I went to. It didn't have a license, but I installed it anyway and downloaded the windows 8 installer on to that and bobs your uncle.
