IE10 will only open in Desktop mode, even when launched from the metro screen!?

I have Windows 8 x64 which is fully updated with Windows updates.
Never bothered much with IE as I use and love fx. But IE's metro mode was kinda cool and new (IMO).
Now when I launch IE from desktop, I get the normal traditional IE like I should. But then, even when I launch IE from Metro, the computer switches to the desktop and starts the traditional IE instead of the Metro full-screened IE. Could you people please help?
IE version is 10.0.9200. then is says "Update version 10.0.21 KB2987107". The option to "install new versions automatically" is checked. Of course I got this info from the desktop IE, have no way to lauch the metro IE till this issue is resolved..
Thanks. :)

UPDATE: I could regain access to IE Metro by doing the following:-
Step 1> Make IE the DEFAULT browser instead of fx.
Step 2> Open "Internet Options" in IE desktop, Click on the "Programs" tab, Uncheck the box that says "Open Internet Explorer Tiles On The Desktop".
Step 3> Close settings and exit out of IE desktop.
Step 4> Launch IE from the Metro Tile.
And viola, there I have the full screen Metro IE again!
But hey, the moment I make Firefox my default browser, the Metro tile for IE throws me back to the desktop and launches the traditional IE again! Furthermore, the "Open Internet Explorer Tiles On The Desktop" option mentioned above in "Step 2" gets checked automatically, and the option to uncheck it is grayed out unless i make IE the default again!
Looks like MS wants to force me to make IE the account-wide default browser if I want to have access to the metro IE. Why'd they do that? Is there a way to keep Firefox the default browser for heavyweight tasks and yet have access to the full screen metro IE for some facebook browsing and news reading? Thanks :)

well I got 7 and been flipping around ie 9 10 and 11 and now i'm back on 10

looks like ie10 is all that works with 8 and don't know what to tell you as I would with windows that supports others like where you could uninstall it back to ie 9 and then reinstall 10 back to see if it was not corrupt in some way

I guess this is why windows 8.1 is free and they want you off 8 due to things like this with it

Thanks junkeymonkey :)
I'm on a metered connection and downloading a 4GB image will eat up almost everything off my 5GB cap. I'd rather wait till Windows 10 and then get a new DVD from MS. If you've got some time to spare, take a look at my original post, found a way to get it working, but with this strange constraint that IE must be set as the default browser for my user account. Maybe you guys here can find a workaround? Thanks :)
