Hi everyone,

I have a samsung hd154ui 1.5tb external hdd. Its plug was damaged and so i started to use it as an internal drive for my desktop PC after disconnecting it from the station properly. At first it was working fine for a couple of days and even I backup some of my data. But suddenly without any reason, it started to make a noise like it was trying to scan continuously or trying to detect info. After the noise started, PC haven't been detected the drive. I cannot see it neither in Bios or in disk manager. I tried to plug it into some properly working hdd stations and to use different PCs but nothing is changed. It is just making that annoying noises all the time and that is all, i cannot see it. I just want to have a time enough to save my data. Do I have a way to save the data myself without making data recovery companies rich? Or the hdd is already dead?

Thanks for helping me out

If the HDD is making continuous seeking noises as if it is unable to tell where the heads are going, there is a high probability the heads have been damaged - the HDD sends the heads all over the place trying to find a signal somewhere to tell it where the heads are but cannot read any. It could also be a damaged PRML amplifier (located on the heads in modern HDDs) or damaged PRML decoder chip. All of these would be cases for professional data recovery shops if you want that data back.

If the problem is something having gone wrong with the heads, there are only two ways to recover data: 1) put in new heads and hope the platters are not too heavily damaged from the old damaged heads carving grooves into it or 2) magnetic force microscope. If the problem is controller board failure, then you need an identical controller board and may need some method to copy drive parameter data from the old board to the new one, which is again something mostly for recovery shops.
