i don't expect any trouble getting the old cooler off my Haswell i5 but I imagine there will be paste residue on the CPU-- recommended to just apply more paste for new cooler? Likely to significantly affect cooling performance? Any recommendations welcome.

I clean off the excess paste prior to putting more on. The Intel stock coolers usually don't leave a lot on the CPU.

I use a lint free cloth with just a couple of drops of rubbing alcohol on it. Be careful not to smear it over the sides of the CPU. In a pinch - you can use a q-tip - make sure not to use too much alcohol - it makes a good conductor....

Old thermal paste wouldn't really be a problem (depending on how old it is), but i would recommend some new paste to be applied.

i would use a old credit card to whip most of it off then switch to a q-tip for assurance. But follow ronintexas' instructions they will probably serve you better
