Hello everyone,

I have a problem where if I install the default graphics card (GT540) it works. However when I want to upgrade to a Radeon HD 7950, it powers on but with no display. When I go to shut off the power it instantly shuts down. To me, this means it hasn't past the boot screen. The only way I can get it to boot with the card in the computer is either;
A) Unplug one of the 6-pin adapters from the GPU
B) Disable the PCI security
Other then that I am not able to use the new GPU. It works with all my other machines except this one.

My model number is HP Pavillion HPE h8-1120.

And yes I've updated all the drivers to everything.

Does anyone know of a bios mod that would help in this situation? I believe it's just a compatibility issue that HP doesn't want people to use different graphics cards besides the ones they supply pre-built.

Thanks,

It sounds more like your PSU is not sufficient to power the HD7950 rather than HP doing anything to prevent it from working (this is very unlikely BTW).

Are you using the stock HP power supply? What is the model number on the power supply itself?

Not all PSUs are created equally, in spite of what their labels may claim.

It's not the PSU. Trust me. I've tested it on a 1200W and it still didn't work.

The stock PSU for that HP model is only 300w. Did you upgrade it?

You tried with a 1200w PSU in this system?

Yes I upgraded the PSU. Hence why it says "Trying to install HD 7950 w/ 600W PSU on a IPISB-CU motherboard. " in the title.

Okay. What make and model? What about my question regarding the 1200w PSU? Did you install it into this rig and try the Radeon?

Also, in your BIOS, what is configured as your primary video device?

This is the 1200W I used to test it http://www.staples.ca/en/OCZ-PPCMK3S1200-Mk-III-Series-...

Here are the links to the PSU's I've tested.

Extreme 2 525W CoolerMaster - http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E1681...
RetailPlus® 600W Power Supply -http://www.staples.ca/en/RetailPlus-600W-Power-Supply/p...

Yes I've tested the 7950 with the 1200W psu and still to no avail.

In the BIOS I have it so that the default device is the graphics card.

While checking your bios, is Lucid Virtu enabled (if supported)?

And the primary video device is set to what? BTW I assume you have the Retail Plus PST installed. It should power this GPU, but it is not a quality product from what little info is available on it.

NVM on the primary device. I missed it earlier. Need to think about this more.

The primary video is set to PCI express. Not integrated graphics.

Understood. Did some more research. Seems that motherboard has issues with PCIe v3.0 GPUs. Many users just replaced the HP motherboard to get around the issue.

Do you have the la test BIOS version installed?

Yeah I updated the BIOS to 7.16. The latest.

Trying to find a document with all of your BIOS options in it. HP doesn't make that easy.
