What is your network adapter make/model (if on the mobo - mobo make/model) and what is your router/cable modem make/model?

Are you connecting wireless or via ethernet cable?

you need the drivers. use the CD. they say its pointless but you need the CD or the drivers loaded onto a USB drive or CD or something. you can download them usually from your motherboard manufacturers web page.

That would be the first step - that should give you connectivity - you should also check the website for the current drivers, as the CD probably has really old drivers.

Usually whatever utilities are on the CD will download the latest drivers.
