Hi, i'm a newbie on computers and i've recently wanted to get wifi so i can use my laptop at home.
I'm currently on a desktop and it's connected straight to the modem. I've tried to put a router in but it doesn't seem to work and it says that my computer is not wireless compatible. I've searched around and i found that i don't have any wireless networking thing. I have a picture HERE
Can someone tell me what i need to make the wireless connection work?
Do i need a wireless network adapter?

If you plug the cable modem ethernet to the WAN input on the router, then connect the computer to the router via ethernet, it should work. Then you can setup your router to work with the laptop.

Don't forget to setup security on the router to WPA/WPA2 - unless you want your neighbors using your internet connection....

Did you see lights flashing on the router and PC?

Can you do a print screen of the IP configuration (command prompt > type "ipconfig" and hit enter)?

That is part of it - there should be a IP V4 listing (something like 192.168.0.XXX, where XXX is a number between 2 and 254).

That would indicate that you are not connected to the router.

Just to verify - the cable modem is plugged into the WAN port on the router via ethernet cable, and the PC is connected to one of the other 4 ports via ethernet cable - correct?

Was the computer working properly when it was connected directly to the modem?

Last thing to check - some ISPs require that you have the router in AP mode only (the cable modem handles the DHCP).

Yeah, i took unplugged the router since i couldn't get internet from it. And yes, it's connected as you said. The computer is working when directly connected to the modem. And the last thing, i honestly have no clue what that means.
