Should I buy the Gigabyte 780 or r9 290x?

or the MSI 970 classic, I don't really want to get the MSI because it seems like it would be noisy and I want it to be quiet.

Solution
970 is the best bang for your buck right now if you can get your hands on one. Otherwise, 780 and 290x trade blows.

FYI I have not heard of many noisy 970s. They are power efficient so they don't need loud fans.

The deciding factor is going to come down to you. Perk wise AMD cards have mantle, OpenCL, FreeSync, and HSA. Nvidia cards have PhysX and G-Sync.

The only 970 I'm able to get a hold of is the MSI classic.

1st off, I wouldn't say that the 970 smashes either the 290x or 780. Yes it's better but it has major drawbacks. It's GPGPU is crap compared to the 290x. It's an efficient architecture but doesn't have the raw horsepower of the 780 or 290x. Hence why it's a much smaller card.

GPU boss isn't a valid source for comparison either. They put out the statistical numbers without any real world testing. If I wanted to compare which GPU has more shader units, I would just go to the card maker's website. These numbers have very little influence on real world scores. Even their "benchmark" data is from an unannounced passmark source. I wouldn't trust the website for purchase situation.

To the OP, Just go with the 290x or 780 and find a card you like. Right now most of them are on huge discounts and you can actually pick out of a selection instead of being forced into one you don't like.
