Ok, so I have a 1 TB My Book Essential (WDH1U10000N), I just updated my PC and bought a new 1TB WD Black drive. I'm looking to clone my old 150 GB WD HHD onto the Black, but I want to back the drive up on the My Book. However, when I connect it, the blue light comes on and disk starts turning. However, the device doesn't appear anywhere! I've looked at Disk Management, can't see it anywhere. The drive worked when I had Windows 7, but now that I'm running 8.1, it won't show...

Any suggestions?

Go back to windows 7. I don't see how anybody puts up with windows 8. Windows 10 is supposed to be out soon. Supposed to give back control to the users like win7 and earlier versions and not hide all the functions & settings so much.

As excellent as that would be, I don't have that option.

Hi there Meswannjr,

Is it recognized by Device Manager? You can start by uninstalling the USB controllers and restart the computer so they can automatically re install.
You can check out this: http://www.thewindowsclub.com/usb-3-0-external-hard-dri...

Hope this will help,

Nope, it's not showing up in the Device Manager.

I will say, when it worked before, the blue light would flash... it's just solid... seems strange to me.

Solid blue light means it is in a standby mode while flashing light means that it is reading/writing. The issue you have most probably is a driver related problem. Let us see if re installing the USB controllers will help. If have another USB 3.0 device which you can attach to your computer, most probably will not work too.
