Purchased and plugged in my new WD 1TB Black. It shows up in BIOS and in Device Manager, however, not in Disk Management. The new drive even shows up in my Intel Rapid Storage app.

Running Windows 8.1 Pro

Device Manager

Disk Management

Do you have a scroll bar in disk management? Normally the unformatted partitions are located at the bottom of the list - all drives with drive letters assigned should be in alphabetical order top to bottom.

Is the drive setup for AHCI in BIOS? If it is setup for IDE/LEGACY or RAID, it doesn't appear in disk management.

Just double checked. My board actually runs UEFI apparently, but the SATA connect mode is AHCI.

Hey there, Meswannjr!

I'm sorry to hear about the issues you encounter with your WD Black.
I'd suggest to try plugging it in another computer and see if it gets detected normally there. Also maybe use a different SATA cable.
You can also partition and format it from there and then plug it back to your PC and see if it will work properly.
I'd also check your motherboard or PC manufacturer for SATA/chipset drivers' updates for Win 8.1 Pro.
Also since it gets detected in the BIOS and Device manager, I'd suggest to download and test the drive with Data LifeGuard:
http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=810
This will detect if the drive is defective, or if it has any bad sectors. If it does, I'd suggest to RMA while still under warranty and get a replacement: http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/8

Hope this helped! Keep me posted! :)

Guessing it's not the drive... Could be cable? But if it were the SATA cable, why would the drive show in UEFI and in Device Manager?

Even if it's blank, shouldn't it show up in Disk Management as Unallocated an allow me to format and partition it?

If they had that article for 8.1 Pro, that would be great....

I was reading a post on Dell's forums - it seems there are quite a few motherboards that have UEFI BIOS, and when you have Windows 8.1 loaded, it won't allow you to add the drives. The solution is to change UEFI to Legacy mode, disable secure boot, reboot, add the drives (partition & format them), then go back to the BIOS and change from Legacy mode to UEFI, enable secure boot and reboot. The drives should still be there.
