As the title suggests I am having trouble overclocking my intel g3258(stock cooler). My motherboard is a Gigabyte Z97-HD3,Thermaltake 550 PSU,and also an R9 270 GPU.

I have tried everything I could think of to no avail.I have my cpu base clock(BCLK) set to 100 as advised from a haswell overclocking guide.I have the cpu clock ratio set to 35 and v-core set to auto. After changing and saving these setting my computer restarts normally but in CPU-Z my core speed still reads only 3.2 mhz.

I was also advised to try disabling power saving settings such as C1E,C3,C6/7 and speed step to see if that was keeping cpu-z from reading current core speed but it did not help.
One thing I noticed was before I switched my power saving plan in windows from balanced to high performance cpu-z was reading my cpu core speed as 799 mhz switching back to 2999 mhz randomly. Now it sits at a steady 3.2 mhz.

Is there something i'm missing here?I've successfully overclocked an a6-3650 without many hiccups but with this new mobo and cpu I can't seem to influence the cpu core speed.
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Your multiplier is only set at 32, so the BIOS is obviously not making the change. Make sure you're confirming the setting and that it stays put. When you go back into the BIOS, is the multiplier still set at 35 because according to CPU-Z, it's not.

I can't find anything that says 'multiplier'.what I did was change 'cpu clock ratio' to 35 assuming it was the same thing.

It is. Multiplier and ratio are synonymous with each other. Are you hitting enter after you make the change in the value box and then saving the settings when you exit the BIOS?

What is your BIOS version? If it's lower than F5, you need to update.

It is F3.I just changed to this board yesterday after bricking a different board trying to update my bios..
Do you have any tips so I can avoid this issue and maybe a link to the proper bios update because I can not seem to find it any where.

Oops nevermind I found the BIOS.I'm still extremely hesitant because of what happened to my other board but I bought this cpu solely for its overclocking potential. Some advice on doing this BIOS update would be greatly appreciated

Ok, to start with, is your board revision 1 or revision 2? This makes a difference. The current bios update for revision 1 is F5. But for revision 2 its F6. Can't use either update with the other board revision.

And by the way, without bios version F5 that board does not support overclocking with the G3258.

It is revision 1.0

Here is the BIOS update file link. It contains the flash utility and the BIOS image. You should be able to just run the .exe and follow the steps but you might want to google your motherboard and updating the BIOS as I need to crash out soon and am not certain there are no other steps necessary other than just running the utility. I don't think there are and I know this should cure your issue but I can't verify the flash procedure until tomorrow.

Glad it worked out. It WAS the BIOS issue that was stopping it, right? I should have went straight for that from the start but wasn't thinking. Good luck with your build AND I hope you are using a good aftermarket cooler with that. Nothing lower than the Hyper 212 EVO and preferably better.

Also, you probably need to get rid of that PSU immediately, depending on the model number. Thermaltake only has a few PSUs that are any good, the rest are real junk. What is the model number of your PSU?

If it's one of these models:

Thermaltake:

Munich 430w
Purepower NP / RU
TR2 and TR2-RX
Smart series

Get rid of it whether you return it, use it as a paper weight or just throw it in the trash.

IF it's one of these it's ok:

Thermaltake:

Toughpower DPS G 1050w
Toughpower series (greater than 600 Watts)
Litepower series
Purepower RX
Toughpower <less than 600 watts

You want something that's at least Tier 2B here:

Yep I was able to overclock immediately after the bios update.I am currently using the stock cooler but that is only temporary.I was only planning on buying the r9 270 but it would not work in conjunction with my last mobo/apu which is what led to a failed bios update and ultimately forcing me to upgrade.

At the moment the most intensive thing I run is middle earth:shadow of mordor on high/very high settings and it never goes over 75% cpu usage and always stays under ~50c.

My PSU is a thermaltake W0330RU http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/ite... This PSU is a couple years old and I agree that it needs to be replaced soon which will most likely be at the same time as my cooler. Thanks for that info it will definitely be useful in finding a new psu.

If you start seeing ANY kind of instability or funny behavior, take that overclock off immediately (At the least) and get that PSU out of there (Preferably). It's really, really, really, NOT, recommended to overclock or use high end GPU cards (Anything over an R7 240 or GTX 730) with a low end or no end, heh, PSU.
