hey guys .. about a year ago everybody was saying that intel i5 is more than enough in modern games and there is no game will use more than 4 cores .. but today i started to notice some games requires i7 , and even i7 overclocked ! ... so my question is will i5 ivy bridge & haswell won't do enough with modern upcoming games ?

Solution
In a couple of years ago , hardcore games only used two cores at most. Developers find it tough to multi thread games, ( allow using more cores) even though amd octa cores were available than too,
Well the fact that developers are using more cores now is caused by two things. 1: games are much better graphically and they utilize Cpu power way more than before so multi threading was the way to go. 2: latest gen console are 8 core and Dev do like to port games from consoles to PC. So more core utilization is obvious
Still i5 is not out of game yet, actually i3 is also impressive for gaming yet, but when it comes to ultra and maxing out games i7 is being stated. Still on steam around 50% people still have dual core Cp . I5 is Gonna stay...
I currently run Wolfenstein The New Order on an i5 4670k but with no OC, this game recommends an i7 but my CPU sits around 60% usage with everything maxed out at 1080p supporting a GTX 780. I could be wrong but maybe when they say i7 they mean mobile i7's and not desktop?

I agree entirely, if you take Watch_Dogs as an example, there's no performance difference between an i5 and an i7. Same goes for Black Flag; the difference between dual and quad core is pretty meaningless.

When a developer/publisher states an i7 as the recommended processor, I suspect it's because they're being lazy in porting the game from console.

No, not at all, Intel Core i5 is still strong enough to handle latest games like Watch_Dogs, Wolfenstein, Shadow Of Mordor and upcoming PC games like Grand Theft Auto V. Though some games may need to be set at high/medium settings, I guarantee you that an Intel Core i5 can run games smoothly until mid 2015. Later on you need to upgrade to an Intel Core i7 to play next-gen games. If you're deciding to buy an i7 then you should definitely go with the Intel Core i7 4790k as it can be overclocked in future to handle next-gen games. ;) Good Luck and Happy Gaming. :)

Currently have a 4670k @ 4.5ghz paired with a 780ti.

Only games that get severely bottlenecked by the cpu are planetside 2, and thus I dont play it anymore.

Next upgrade is going to be to an I7 but thats on the backburner

just until mid 2015?!! that's very bad man ..going back to a processor like i5 sandy bridge it was capable of running all games smoothly since 4+ years until these days .. and now i have to upgrade my cpu almost every one year just to be on the run with next-gen games. !! ..i was just concerning of upgrading my gpu in the next year , thinking that i don't have to worry about my i5 unitll next 3 years at-least.

Considering 99.9% of the gamers on Steam use Core2Duos, i3's and i5's and various AMD processors I really doubt it.

@OP , Not at all, the core i5 still offers you decent single core performance (i.e. Single core apps like games, browsers) The thing that differienciate from the I7 is the multithreded perfromance in which I7 is a little better. But if you just want the msot FLOPs out of your CPU , go for AMD. It seems that for a gaming build, the I5 (and FX 8350) is the way to go.

Or a Cray supercomputer, or IBM's Bluejean!
