When I connect a number of devices to a usb 3 host port with win 7 or 8 I get "USB Controller resource exceeded". I do not get this with the same configuration using a usb 2 host port. It seems to be related to the number of open pipes.

More about : usb controller resource exceeded

Your USB Host controller probably has a maximum data rate.

USB 3.0 transfers data much, much faster than USB 2.0.

It's possible those data transfer rates exceed what your USB controller can handle.

If you want me to do further research I'd need the version of your USB Host Controller, available via Device Manager.

This is the statement I made on a microsoft thread after being told to re-install my drivers

I have a combination of hubs and devices. When the total number exceeds 29 I get the "Out of resource" error. This is only when connected to a usb 3 port, connecting to usb 2 ports allows me to exceed this number considerably. I have tried this on several Windows 8 64 bit systems and also Windows 7 32 bit and 64 bit systems on a number of different PCs. I have tried rebooting, power cycling, removing and reinstalling drivers, checking for the latest driver using the option in the device manager and nothing seems to change the fact that I cannot have a lot of units on a usb 3 port. Using usb 2 ports has never been a problem with many more devices in the past.

All of the devices including the hubs are self powered so this is not a power supply issue. I am led to the conclusion that there is a difference between the way multiple devices are handled.

Many PCs now only come with usb 3 ports so this is a real problem to me.

Any assistance will be appreciated.

At the initail connection stage I am not transfering any user data and this is the point where I get the error. Since I have no problems with usb2 host ports with the same setup I don't think that the problem is data rate - but maybe someone else knows different. One of the systems that I have tried has host hub ports from Etron with the description USB 3.0 extensible controller, but I have had the same problem on a laptop which will be a differant host controller.

It sems to be related to number of open pipes. My units have three open pipes each and when I get beyond 13 units (39 pipes) I get errors indicated in the device manager. There are also four usb 2 hubs in the chain. If I use more devices I can end up with an error message as described above.

Any suggestions received with thanks.
