I have a Lenovo Y500. Specs are:
SLI 650M
I7 3630QM
16 GB RAM
1 TB HDD
Windows 8.1

I want to record games at around 30fps if possible and not have to go on minimum settings, any idea on how to optimize/upgrade my laptop without paying too much? I am thinking of switching the HDD for a 256GB SSD and then using the 1TB hdd as an external maybe? Help me out!

I want to fix it up and be able to record, what recording software should I use? seems like Mirillis Action gives me best performance, any better softwares?

Try get FRAPS (trial version) and measure fps while you are in gaming.. Most of games with intensive graphics (Far Cry 3, BF3, COD-BO, AC$) will get you less than 20-35fps on ultra/high... this means your system may able to handle these games at these preset unless you lower down to med preset, then try screen recording.

Monitor memory usage (Task Manager> Details), and CPU / GPU temp is getting high while doing this, just to make sure you it is not software issue that makes it lag... CoreTemp / Real Temp for CPU monitoring, GPU-Z (Sensors).. or you may any monitoring programs you know.
