I have a laptop that's been through a lot but has always kept working perfectly (apart from software issues and one dead HDD). Now it was dropped on it's corner from a height of about 20cm. Everything continues to function except the fan is now making incredible noise.
It seems to be exactly like the sound old DVD/CD drives used to make, and the chassis vibrates similarly. In contrast, before the incident the only discernible noise came form the airstream.
I have checked for mechanical defects, but i can't detect anything being broken, or anything chafing anywhere.
What's the source of this? Is there any way to correct it without having to send the laptop in for repairs?(The sound might be obnoxious, but not enough to pay a lot to have it fixed)

Hi
Either the knock has bent something and the fan blades are catching or it has jolted the fan out of it's bearing.
In either case you need to take the laptop apart and have a look.

You can replace the fan, fairly easy in many models, although in some cases you have to replace the full heatsink.
