Hey Folks,

I recently decided to upgrade my cpu and motherboard. My original set up:

Gigabyte z77 Ud3h atx lga 1155
Intel core i5 3470s
8gb (2x4gb) Crucial Ballistix SP ddr3 1600
evga supernova 750 watt g2 80+ gold
cooler master hyper 212 evo
msi gtx 760 2F oc
Zalman z11 plus case

This was all working fine at the time of the exchange.

I dropped in a core i7 4790k and a Gigabyte z97 gaming 7. After i did that and hooked everything up, my machine began a pattern of attmepting to post, but restarting every 3 seconds. I tried testing the ram sticks one by one, but the problem persisted. I checked and re-checked all of my wiring and it seems fine to me; the 8-pin for the cpu is in its place, as well as the 24-pin. I removed my cooling solution because i suspected that i had put a little too much thermal compound on the cpu. I cleaned everything appropriately and re-seated the cooler with a little less compound, but adequate coverage.

While i had the cooler off, i checked to see if i could see any bent pins on the mob/cpu, but i really didn't see anything out of the ordinary, though, i haven't had the chance to look at it with a magnifying object. I will do that again today just to make sure.

I also attempted to boot by disconnecting my drives, because I understand they'll need to be reformatted, but i cant even get into my bios. So my questions here are:

A) I did some research on both of these products before i went out and randomly purchased them and i saw nothing that would lead me to believe they're incompatible. But are they?

B) What else should I check in troubleshooting?

C) Admittedly, I have not checked the stand-offs, as I did not change them from mobo to mobo. Is that an idiotic thing to have done?

D) My PSU is weeks old and has not given me issues at all. Is there any reason wy the one i have wouldn't work with my set up? Is it too weak?

Any information is greatly appreciated! Save meh, Tom Cruise!

Solution
Sounds like you are dealing with an issue unregulated to the hard drive since you can not even choose boot order. Therefor I posted the trouble shooting thread and want to point out the link there to the bread boarding.
Let's go over what';s happening ....

1. You have an older system with the correct drivers installed on the Hard Drive

2. Now you have a new Motherboard with a new chipset and your old hard drive / old windows install.

3. You try and boot machine and OS is trying to load drivers for old hardware that it can not find and and can not find new drivers for hardware it can find. It's confused.

4. Easiest way out .... disconnect HD, buy a new SSD or HD and install windows fresh. When done with all updates, driver installs, etc, reconnect old HD adn dlete Windows folder and boot files from the HD.

You may have windows authorization issues but most of the time, I haven't experienced it when using same brand MoBo..... after all what is one supposed to do if ya old MoBo dies.... can't find a exact replacement as Z77 has passed 'end of life".

Would disconnecting those drives and trying to boot do anything? I'm just looking for a more cost effective way at this point. I'll try to find a cheap ssd i can temporarily boot to.

If i try that, and it works, how do i fix the issue so i can continue to use the current drives that i have (both ssd)?

You can format your HD and lose everything on it as an alternative,

That's why I **always** recommend putting your OS on a separate SSD or HD partition. Something like

C:\ OS
D:\Programs
E:\Games
F:\Data

or even

C:\ OS
D:\ Everything else

Then you just format C and reinstall. Install your programs over themselves to set up registry and windows and all is right with the world.

Yeah, that makes sense for sure. I honestly didn't even think of that. Sort of dropped the ball. So my most convenient solution at this point is to buy a new ssd, fresh windows install on that, and just use the other two as storage now? Correct me if i'm confusing anything here.

Also, how sure are you that this is my issue, ahaha? I just want to make sure that this is the problem before i drop a few more bucks on a new ssd. I really appreciate the help, by the way. Thanks again.

I wont mind too much. It's really only games, most of which are not tied to any saves or anything like that.

I want to make sure that this is the actual issue at play before i take any steps like reformatting or buying. So, to double check, the machine will power on, but reset within 3 seconds, never inializing the bios or anything like that. It just powers down and attempts again, like it's in purgetory. If i disconnected those ssd's, should i be able to access my bios? Because i've completey disconnected them, attempted to boot, and have exprienced the same issue. I didn't think you needed your drives connected to be able to access your bios, but obviously i've done something wrong, so I'm likely mistaken about that.

Hey, thanks for the feedback! Much appreciated,

My question is will this still happen even if i disconnect said drives from the motherboard. Because I still cant post and access bios while they're out. I was under the impression i could still access the bios without having to have a drive connected. Are there other possibilites here?

Looks like it was actually a bad mobo. I noticed that a pin on the f usb connection was broken, so I brought it back to the shop and they let me exchange it. Once I hooked up the new one and reformatted my drives I was good to go. It's rare that motherboards are actually the cause, but in this case I was unlucky.

I'm definitely going to set up partitions as suggested though. I think that's a great idea.

Thanks for the feedback.
