What is the maximum resolution monitor supported by my computer?

I am planning on buying a 22 inch monitor which has resolution of 1920x1080. Right now I am using a CRT monitor with 1080*768 resolution. When I right click on on desktop go to Graphic Properties----> graphic settings. I can see that the maximum resolution available is 1152*864

I have Asrock G31 m-vs mother board. Intel G31/33 family Chipset. Chip Type: Intel GMA 3100. No additional Graphic Card.

Will I be able to set display resolution to 1920*1080 if I get this new monitor? Or will I be limited to what I am right now?

The AsRock website says that G31 m-vs -supports D-Sub with max. resolution up to 2048x1536 @ 60Hz

I am not sure if it supports 2048x1536 without any additional graphic card or if it just means that it can support graphic cards which have resolution as high as 2048x1536 ?

it means thats the highest supported resolution using the onboard graphics but i wouldnt recommend you use onboard to go that high because its going to be stressing the ram alot seeing as though its shared memory .. its best that you even get a lowend graphics card for even $50 to go to that resolution without problems ..

I am not planning on playing video games on my PC. Just movies I guess. Do I still need to buy a graphic card?

no integrated do movies fine but running at such high res can do a number on the ram and cause a bit of slow down in the pc .. if you have more than 4gb of ram you wont see the slow down though .. to be safe its best you get even a cheap gt 220 for like $35 it will allow you to do 1080 or blu ray play back much better than the onboard .. onboard tend to struggle with hd movies

I look into graphic cards worth $50 or may be higher as you advised.
But lets say I post pone buying a graphic card. I will be able to set resolution to 1920 right? I read somewhere that GMA 3100 supports 2048x1536 but its 4:3 resolution not 16:9. Whereas the monitor I am planning on buying is wide screen 16:9. What difference does that make? I mean when you calculate ...4/3=16/9 right? How much can it hamper the picture quality?
