I stepped on my sony vaio laptop screen and the screen got vertical bars (looks like http://www.thecomputercellar.com/wp-content/uploads/201...).

I ordered a replacement and installed it. Looks ok, boots fine, but the bars show up as soon as Windows starts loading. I figure I must have damaged it during install.

I ordered a second replacement, same thing happens.

The video driver seems ok, because an external monitor works great.

Is this a hardware/connector issue? If so, can I fix it?
Is it a software/driver issue?

Details: sony vaio model number VPCSE13FX/S http://esupport.sony.com/US/p/model-home.pl?mdl=VPCSE13...

This issue is usually related to the graphics card and not the display but since the external monitor works properly, I'm going with a damaged cable from the motherboard to the display - That's what I'd look to replace here.

I agree with Friedman; your GPU is likely fine, and I can't see you having the exact same problem on two new screens. Your video cable is likely damaged, and that will be harder to source a replacement. You may need to shop around on eBay for one of those.
