Hello all,

I have a problem deciding what is best.

Simply put i have an core i7 920, processor. The motherboard it sits on is faulty. It wont function properly sometimes.

An second hand replacement will cost between 100-150 euro. Around 127 - 192 dollar.

First question, is it worth it ?.

Secondly is it possible to get an cpu and motherboard for that price wich would be similar in speed as the 920. The mainboard is an msi big bang xpower.

I have been searching for it, but i am inconclusive.

i hope someone here can help me with this issue.

The new mainboard needs 3 ram slots, and the socket needs to be one of the following.

Compatibility
Intel™ LGA 1150, 1155, 1156, 1366, and 2011
AMD™ sockets FM1, FM2, AM2, and AM3
Hydro Series H100i.

Thanks in adavance.

Solution
The 920 is certainly still a viable CPU. If you can get a decent MoBo for a good price, by all means do so. However, from an investment standpoint investing a lot on 3 generations old tech wouldn't be a good idea if you don't plan on stretching this box's life > 18 months or so.

The equivalent set up would be a $150 Z97 MoBo w/ $220 processor (4690k)

Thank you for that answer, and i already made a deal for an second hand one.
The Asus Sabretooth X58, it goes for 125 euro, around 159 dollar.

Wich is cheaper then replacing the cpu and the motherboard. I am very happy with the 920.

The pc itself wont be use for high level games, so it doesnt have to be very fast. it will last a long time.
