After 2 - 3 months my pc just randomly shut of and when i try to turn it on again it the red CPU led in my sabertooth 990fx r2,0 will turn on and the computer wont do anything.

I was playing some modded MC when this happened, note i also think the pc randomly restarted before the incident happened, (left for 10 min and when i was back it was at locked screen and all the programs i was using where gone, i dont know if it was windows update neither?

Current State
when i plugged it MoBo turns the green led that indicates it has power, i can connect my phone and it still charges.
When i turn it on, all fans that are connected directly from the psu turns on but those that are connected that are directly connected to the MoBo wont (heat sink fan and VGS fans. and it stays like this, also cpu temperature doesnt rise on my case temp checker

-PC-
MoBo = Asus sabertooth 990fx R2.0
CPU = Amd fx 8350
VGA = MSI GTX 660 OC gaming
PSU = Corsair CX600
RAM = Gskill Sniper 8gb
HDD = 500gb and 320gb
Heat sink = Cooler Master T80 (i think)

Ambient temperature = 30C - 32C

i think i still got chance to get a replacement, but i'm not currently in the US so i rather send just the defective piece, if there is no way i can fix it here.

Solution
In my case i solved the problem by thoroughly cleaning my Components and found out that the reason why it didn't want to boot and gave me the red cpu light was that the heatsink fan wasnt working correctly. It was like the Fan pins wherent making good contact. Ever since i fix that the pc have been working well ^ ^ (its working good for around 2 month now)

TLDR:
Bad connection with the heatsink fan causes red cpu led

i did read about 10 to 15 of those thread before posting this one, the thing is that most of them or all of them are about ppl who bought it and got the issue since the start, mine was working just fine. and then it broke down.

was hoping for a way to make it work back again

well it may have just took it longer to get there.. I hate to bad mouth asus but my last 3 boards from them were nothing but a headache and that last sabertooth I had done them in with me .. also my buddy and his son got one each and they all went in the trash there not the same asus we grew up with any more .. we took all the parts from off them sabers and put them on the new non asus boards and all worked 100% stable -- go figure

lol i remember reading those lines in one of those dozen of thread i read on this forums. Anyway which MoBo you using now? I picked the sabertooth bcz i heard it was one of the best for overclocking (planing to do some future over clocking when i get some water cooling system)

I went intel -- asrock myn buddy went gigabyte 990fx ud3 and his son went asrock 990fx extreme 9 I think

well my saber is collecting dust in its box in the closet right now alos we rma one of our boards to asus and after a bit of fuss they sent back what looked like a ''referb'' board that had its own issues .. it was like they just swap out the boards in the hopes you can get some ones trade in headache to work , sad

ya with all the partsa we spent on them and swaping things out all we found was the sabers teeth sunk deep in to our bill folds

btw before i actually try to get a new MoBo, i want to make sure thats the problem. If i see that the fans arent turning on and all the other stuff in the MoBo to, but i can get energy out of it (i can charge my phone through the usb and fans connected to peripherals are working) is this a MoBo issue or indeed by CPU is dead/toasted

well see your now getting to where we were is it this ?? so you tinker with it buy a part to see well no that's not it so then you look at that tinker with it buy a part tinker with it and no that's not it
maby the psu failed in some way and not supplying the board its correct power ?? well now you buying a part to see if that's it and then find well no its not

so you see where I'm going with this?? as I said and not to make you feel bad or hurt your feelings but we had 4 total sabertooth boards and they were all just crap , buggy, bsod , never stable , bla bla bla .... junk

I wish I could tell ya this is what it is and have you going but if its something you cant put you finger on and say this went out , your looking at some time and money consuming tinkering

for us replaceing the board resolved our issues but that don't mean it will form you its just funny that we had 4 boards bought at 3 different tims with different parts between us and all were a fail in some wat and the one we rma was just as bad ???
one bad board is just bad luck but that we had was just bad quality all around from asus .

maybe some one else here will jump in and have something better for you to try I hope so for your sake so good luck..

i know what u getting to, but it my case what if the MoBo was good but the CPU died bcz of sudden high voltage, it will be crap if it actually happen...

Anyways when i took the VGA and HDD out it worked for a While maybe a minute it started marking the VGA Led than it went back to the CPU_led. Wonder if it means that is still save-able

well as I see it asus likes red lights and they keep rolling in here at toms heres another one just posted

http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-2338937/red-led-stays-lit-gpu-spot.html

you know I posted this on another asus red light thread

when I come here to toms and click to show all threads it states -- 1795113 results:

and just asus with red light issues is --310443 results

that's like what?? 20% of all the threads here at toms??

after tweaking a little my MoBo best beat is to change it, i wish i had a friend with similar PC so i can test it more accurately.
anyways to finish the question, is there any MoBo you will recommend me, you said your friend got a gigabyte 990fx ud3 is there any good new about it? what about the asrock 990fx extreme 9

im sticking with amd bcz i down want to waste even more changing to Intel
also what about the gigabyte 990fx ud5 seems like it has very similar specs to that of Sabertooth (although ppl keep saying sabertooth is better, dont know why)

ya that friend deal can help a bunch to test things out as for the giga board as I said my buddy went with the 990fx ud3 and last I heard and seen it was all good that's all I know on the gigabyte

''although ppl keep saying sabertooth is better, '' well you get that same line here at toms

so then why do asus threads out number the rest like 100 to 1 ?? not saying you cant get a lemon from any brand , but dang

dude I wish I knew what to tell you for the better but I don't -- funny too as long as you been posted where are them asus fan boys at to help you on this ??

sorry man wish I could do you more

Well anyway thx, i read i few dozens of those thread and they all landed on changing the MoBo, plus i doubt it was the CPU since it marked around 40C on my case and socket temp will be around 50C (heard that 75C was the highest before affecting the CPU)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I had the same issue , it was the Seasonic 650W 80+gold with a single 54a rail that were not sufficient for the pc specs (and your GPU is OC like mine) !
The pc was shutting off itself on games and this was coming much sooner days after days... A second motherboard (well tried to buy a second board to test) , worked few hours but then it did the Red CPU LED for both AMD PHENOM 965 BE or the FX 8350 even with the less HDD and DVD Drive without OC.
Nothing but the RED LED for both CPU and NO POST , and it was out with the latest BIOS directly provided from the manufacturer (October 2014).
Finally i bought a Cooler Master V1200 Platinum the month after following after the second board and it solved all the issues i had for my pc.
I discovered that it was the PSU by using a Power Calculator :

My pc was need a 850W minimum for working fine !
When you purchase the next PSU , get one that won't be 100% loaded from your components , buy it with headroom to keep a silent and cold PSU that will work between 50% - 80% load !
Now i can love my Sabertooth boards without any doubts with a 1200W Platinum PSU , my RAM sticks finally run stable like never before @ 1866MHZ and Dang : a COLD PSU , provided a lower delta °c for your GPU and stability for VRMs . Finally i have found back great gaming enthusiasm since.

My PC Specs :
AMD FX 8350 - Stock 4.00GHZ ;).
(1)ASUS SABERTOOTH 990FX R2.0 Win8.0 *Used - (2)ASUS SABERTOOTH 990FX R2.0 Win8.1 *Unused !
ASUS R9-280X DCU II OC.
Corsair Vengeance Pro 1866MHZ 2X4GB XMS CL9.
Kingston HyperX 3K SSD 120GO / 10K RPM HDD.
ASUS DVD-DL Burner.
4X Corsair AF Quiet 120mm.
2X BitFenix Spectre Pro PWM 120mm.
Cooler Master V1200 80+Platinum.
Thermaltake NIC C4 CPU Cooler for 220W TDP.
Arctic MX4 20g and Arctic Clean 1&2.

Ambient Temperature : ~30°c ~32°c .

36°C-37°C-40°c MB/CPU/GPU - MAX CPU ~50°C
@ Unigine Valley MAX 144FPS - AVG 64FPS - Min 29.9FPS. GPu Temps 64°c~74°c.

The Seasonics 650W 80+GOLD now with :
Athlon II X2 260 3.2GHZ Stock / Default Cooler
ASUS HD 6670 1GD3
4GB 1333MHZ 2X2GB CL7
ASUS MEA78L-M LX3
1x 7200RPM HDD
Samsung DVD DL Burner
+1 3PINS 120mm FAN

Also , but Seasonic 650W 80 + GOLD to as it worked for 1year (August 2013 - August 2014..) do not take lightly my considerations from the gold 650W with a single rail of 54a was not sufficient for the sabertooth 990FX r2.0 + FX8350 systems & oced graphics card !
If you plan for few others components, your PSU not going to last long.
You should do a test with max aging and load from outervision 's psu calculator !
Have fun , and i am glad that you had fixed the problem !
Same about second system mentioned with Athlon II X2 260. The 430W PSU of 2X Rails of 18a died after ~1 years 6 month with same issues even after 1 month since last thermal replace it were shutting down randomly after few days...!

My Result with Regular MB / 90% load and 50% capacitor aging / R9 280X :
Minimum PSU Wattage: 686 W
Recommended PSU Wattage: 736 W
Recommended PSU: EVGA Supernova 850 B2 Power Sup...

Now i swap for GTX660 using regular MB 90% 90% 50%:
Minimum PSU Wattage: 546 W
Recommended PSU Wattage: 596 W
Recommended PSU: Corsair CX750 Builder Series ATX 80 PLUS Bronze Certified Power Supply

Using High End MB / 100% CPU TDP / 100% System load / 50% Capacitor aging + GTX660 /Sabertooth / 1SSd /1HDD 6 Fans / Burner / 4 USB used :
Minimum PSU Wattage: 644 W
Recommended PSU Wattage: 694 W
Recommended PSU: Corsair CX750 Builder Series ATX 80 PLUS Bronze Certified Power Supply or EVGA 750...
And This results on GTX660 not OC ! The Sabertooth is a high-end motherboard

The CX600 is a : MAX : 46A - 552W !
You think in fact it is the PC that heats, but true is the PSU!
AMD Systems run cooler than Intel Systems .

ASUS tech support doesn't even help you, they just keep pushing you for an RMA. BUT THE REAL PROBLEM FOR ALL IS the 3 pin connector for the cpu . That's the culprit, You need to NEVER connect to the cpu power 3 pin female connector to the mobo 3 pin cpu fan male connector . You have to use the 3 pin female connector from the CPU on the 4 pin male connector just to the right of it on the MOBO called the cpu fan optional, it is a 4 pin male, but you use the 3 pin female cpu connector there and the embedded slot that places it in the right direction IS USED leaving 1 pin unused> so spread the word...the 3 pin male connector on the sabertooth FX990 is useless.

Also after a few maintenance sections (mainly just dusting the pc) i realized that the Sabertooth female 24 pin connector isnt that good. Sometimes you will need to slightly shake the connector so that the mobo will properly take the male pin connector from the power supply (this was also the culprit from some random shutdowns when the mobo was drawing to much power from the power supply, even though the power supply has more than enough power to run the system)

I would just like to thank everyone in this thread, especially the one who posted and the selected answer, for leading me to the solution in my case.

in my setup, what happened was, i connected a 4 port PWM hub to the CPU_OPT 4-pin MOBO connector. The 2 AIO rad fans were connected to the fan hub. The AIO pump connector is connected to the CPU_FAN 4-pin MOBO connector (both the CPU fan and CPU_OPT are located close beside each other and they are both 4-pin connectors).

What I did is to relocated the 4 port fan hub to CHA_FAN3 which is at the upper right-hand corner of the board. Now everything seems to be fine. My wild guess is that the CPU_FAN and CPU_OPT connectors share MAX amperage which is 1 AMP. while the rest of the other chassis fan ports each has MAX 1 AMP. Most rad fans are powerful and they use as much as 0.36 AMP each. 2 rad fans + the AIO pump would probably exceed 1 AMP and this may be causing the problem.

Just a note, the CPU_FAN MOBO connector is a 4-pin PWM type which is exactly the same as CPU_OPT. There is a 3 pin MOBO connector in between the CPU 8-pin power socket and the CPU_FAN 4-pin connector. This 3 pin-connector has no label at all on the board and it doesn't have the slot with which a 3-pin female connector would snug fit. Without checking the manual for its use, it is just right to stay away from that unlabeled 3 pin connector. Use all the 4-pin PWM CPU and chassis fan connectors instead. I also installed an 8-port 4-pin fan hub which is connected to a 12V SATA power cable directly to the PSU in order to relieve the MOBO from chassis fan load.

Here it is I got the fix right here, You need to download Version 0906 firmware {Something got messed up when they added new CPU support to there firmware} Unzip the firmware version 0906 and put it on a USB drive change the file name to ST990R20.CAP Push the bios flashback button , Wait till the flashback button light turns off. Then remove bios battery and all mother board power-cables for 5min. Plug it all back in and your ready to go. (Note: make sure the usbdrive is in the usb port next to the bios flashback button it has a white box around it. This firmware doesn't have a post beep) Use this link to find the lowest firmware that will work for you dont go lower than 0906 https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/SABERTOOTH_990FX_R20/HelpDesk_CPU/

My CPU is FX-8350 there list is incorrect 0906 IS A "Validated since BIOS" for the 8350
