Another Upgrade Thread, are you thinking what I'm thinking?

Hello fellow hardware enthusiasts,

I am contemplating wether I should upgrade or not.

Currently, my system is running
- an old but trusty i7 860
- on a msi p55-gd65 1156soc
- a decent r9 280x (gigabyte windfore)
- combined with a 650watt PSU (gold?)
- and 8 gigs of 1600mhz ram

The parts i'm looking at right now are

- 2way sli gtx 970 asus strix cards
- an i7 4790k
- paired with a coolermaster hyper212 evo cpu cooler
- the msi z97 gaming 5 motherboard
- and last but not least, the corsair AX760 PSU

Also worth noting. I just game on a full HD monitor (no multiscreen). I also sometimes do some editing/rendering. The question is, would it be worth the upgrade for now or should I wait it out. Maybe AMD would shake it up alittle pretty soon? Also, would this be the best bang for the buck? What are your two cent's worth?

Solution

I would upgrade to the 4690K, 4790K if you wish but it really has no advantage for the 33% price increase for gaming and a decent Z97 motherboard and use your 280X and see if you...

if you have the cash and arent happy with your current performance, then spend it.
that old i7 860 is leaps and bounds slower than a 4790k, however the majority of the 860's made it to 3.8ghz or higher making it pretty adequate for gaming. additionally, your mobo supports overclocking, if you were looking to save some coin thats where i would start.

if your ddr3 1600mhz ram is 1.5v, which it likely is, it should be a pretty easy swap over to a z97 platform.

that coolermaster 212 HSF isnt that great. you can find cheaper coolers that deliver approx the same performance. above and beyond that, if youre gonna spring for sli 970's and a 4790k...just get something good. there are lots of better quality air and water cooling units for reasonable prices.
id suggest an 850w psu, or perhaps the AX860. something non-rubbish.

and sli970's? i hope youre running a higher-than-1080p resolution, otherwise that power will be wasted

yes, i post before finishing a thought sometimes :)
i wouldnt bother waiting for AMD to push out something to compete with intel ipc-wise, seems they arent even trying.

as far as waiting it out: there are always newer and better products coming out, depending on how long you wait. if your performance in games is lacking and youre trying to hold off on a complete system overhaul, then overclock the snot out of that CPU and throw a 970 in there. you could even sell your r9 280 to help recoup some of the cost involved.

finally, if you are set on a total system overhaul you should consider the 4690k. the 4790k will only help during rendering/editing, essentially none in gaming. whether the extra cost, 4790k vs 4690k, is worth it to you really depends on how much you value your rendering time. either cpu will be a strong upgrade in rendering and editing over what you have.

Well, that's the problem, my current build is lacking in some games. I'm looking at you borderlands 2. What would you say about a single gtx 980 vs the sli 970's? It would save me the cost of a new PSU..

Geez, i've left out too much information. The CPU is at a stable 3,6Ghz. So would it even be noticable to swap over to intel's 4th gen processors? And no, I'm not gaming on more than one Full-HD monitor, (do have a second screen, but this doesn't matter). That 2nd 970 would probably only come in handy if I were to get a 120+ Hz monitor..So really, have i just lost it? Be honest!

I would upgrade to the 4690K, 4790K if you wish but it really has no advantage for the 33% price increase for gaming and a decent Z97 motherboard and use your 280X and see if you really need a new video card. It would depend on your monitor/monitors resolution and refresh rate as to what I would suggest. A lot of the new games are CPU bound.
