Hello everyone,

So I am building a new system. Specs are as follows:

CPU: i7 4790K, OC'ed to hopefully 4.5GHz
CPU Cooler: Corsair 105
Memory: Corsair 16GB (8X2) DDR3 2400Mhz
GPU: THIS IS THE TOPIC'S MAIN DEBATE. Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 OC'ed, or Gigabyte GTX 980 G1 OC'ed...both have 4GB Vram. GTX 980 has higher CUDA core. They come pre-OC'ed, but obviously I would run tests to increase this OC.
Monitor: Asus PB278Q, 1440P 60Hz.
Other components, parts, etc to complete the build. Too long of a list to type out.

So, my end goal here is to game on that monitor at 1440p, high to ultra settings, at a consistent ~60fps. I know this depends on the game, but on average, can I expect to achieve this goal with just a single Gigabyte GTX 970 card OC'ed to maybe 1450Mhz? Or do I need to fork out ANOTHER $250+ dollars for a GTX 980 OC'ed...

I saw some benchmark videos of the two cards, and it looks like in very demanding games, the 970 falls to even mid-high 30's fps in 1440p at max settings, while the 980 manages to still get around the high 40's.

Btw, I prefer to game at 1440p at 60fps rather than 1080p at 120fps. Just personal preference.

So, do I need to go with the 970 or 980? I'm already shelling out a lot for this build since it's from the ground up with a monitor and all of the peripherals, so an extra $200+ is a lot.

Thanks community in advance.

I would personally go with a 970, and then go SLI later if needed.

As you said on some games even the 980 can't keep a consistent 60fps, those are the situations where your either going to have to turn the settings down or fork up the cash for SLI.

IMO (coming from someone that uses a 1440p monitor) the 970 is the best bang for buck out there. I run my 1440p at 96Hz with a 7970 and in most games I am doing just fine (saving money for crossfire) so a 970 should be more than enough for a really good gaming experience at 1440p.
