Hi guys, I'm building a new pc at the moment and wanted to know if I can transfer my Windows 7 licence from my old computer to my new build. The old computer originally had Windows Vista pre installed but I upgraded to Windows 7 last year. Is the Windows 7 licence locked to my old computer and a new OS needed or can I transfer it?

Thanks
William

That all depends on what specific license it is.
Original Vista, then an Upgrade license to 7 would require installation of Vista, then upgrade to 7. Pain in the butt.

If the Win 7 was a retail license and you have the license key for it...yes, you can reinstall.

An alternate solution might be to sell the old PC ($100+), and use those funds for a new Windows 7 for the new PC.

Hi the original Vista was OEM software but the Windows 7 was a complete re-install with a different product key which I bought from my local TESCO store. Should that be okay to use again?

Probably. You may have to call the phone robot at MS to reactivate.
