Components:
i5 4570 processor
MSI Z87 G45 motherboard
Kingston 2x4GB hyper x beast RAM
Sapphire Dual X R9 280 GPU
Power Supplies used to test:
Corsair CS 550M
XFX XXX 750W
XFX XXX 650W
(If I've missed any components you think are relevant please let me know!

Right where to start...
Basically, I just bought the GPU and stuck it in my pc. The power supply just kept making a click noise and nothing happened. This led me to believe that my power supply might not be powerful enough to power the GPU or had another fault. So I bought a 750w xfx psu.
I installed the psu and went to power it on but nothing, the cpu fan span for less than a second but no other signs of power to the system. Thought I might have been very unlucky and got another faulty psu but.I ordered another one but Amazon made a mistake and sent me 650w one, Tried it anyway, no joy, same problem. Therefore led me to believe graphics card was at fault but when put in my friends computer who has a 650w ocz psu it powered on fine with no problems.

I'm not sure what I can do, short of replacing every single part which isn't an option (no money).

Have a feeling it's the motherboard but it powers on fine with the corsair psu and no Graphics card?

A few mates who know about computers can't figure it out.
I'm beyond confused and whoever works this out is an absolute genius!
Best answer will be selected as soon problem is fixed.

Thanks a lot guys.

Just seen where you said it boots without the GPU.
Connect the monitor to the motherboard without the video card does everything work?
If so reset CMOS and try the video card in another slot on the board.
You do have the power supply connected to the video card right?

check your mb bios rev. they drop a bios file 1.6 to help fix issues with gpu. make sure your running the newest bios file. when you update the bios do it from inside the bios and not from windows..doing it from windows can brick bios.

Did your mates look at your computer? Did you connect all the necessary cables from/to the PUS and the motherboard, CPU and GPU?

He said it works without the video card.

Do you have a PC speaker attached or on the MB

You should get at least 1 post beep on power on (Anything other than this is some problem)

This typical issue of Fan spinning for 1 sec then nothing is a 9/10 a MB Fault...

Hi zerk, thanks for the reply.
Connecting monitor to motherboard does work providing I only use the Corsair PSU, it will not respond to either of the xfx power supplies...
Have reset the CMOS a few times to no avail. Also tried the graphics card in a different PCI slot, no difference unfortunately.
haha yeah, GPU had no manual but i guessed that it wanted both 6 pin slots filled. Tried with just 6 pins in either power port on the graphics card but still nothing. As i say, card definitely works, just don't get why my motherboard won't accept power from either xfx power supply...
Though the corsair psu should also have been able to power the graphics card as well to be fair?
Thanks for the help and tips

Mine is currently running 1.6 but i'll update the bios at some point. As hopeful as I am, the changelogs don't mention anything about power supply compatibility but i'll demo update it and see, thanks for the tip mate.

Yeah they did, I left the cables as they were, PC works perfectly with no graphics card and corsair PSU. Its only once either the graphics card or xfx psu is added that problems arise. When i add the xfx power supply, I don't change the wiring, just plug the already fitted cables into the relevant slots on the power supply?

Power supply cables are compatible with other power supply's from different brands right?

Thanks for the help :)

There is one of those small speakers attached to the motherboard but it's never made any noise. I just guessed that it only made noises when something was wrong but as the motherboard doesn't fire up properly with the xfx pus's it won't have a chance to beep. Wish this motherboard had a light.

If it is a motherboard fault how comes it works perfect when used with the Corsair PSU?
Thanks for the help mate

I agree it does sound baffling.

Just so I have all my info straight... please correct or add anything to below

Corsair CS 550M PSU + Motherboard using Onboard Video = Working
Corsair CS 550M PSU + Motherboard + New Video Card - PSU Clicks and not working

Any XFX PSU + Motherboard using onboard Video = not working
Any XFX PSU + Motherboard + New Video Card in any slot = not working

New Video Card is Working fine in a Friends PC - meaning New GFX is Fine

At no time every has the PC made any Post Beeps or Error Beeps from the PC Speaker

I Had a Quick look at the Manual but I Could not see if there was an options to turn the onboard PC Speaker on/off
The PC Speaker diagnostic tool - the absent of a post beep or any error beeps when some should be present is weird

XFX PSU do use a protection modes so may be apparently not working due to detecting an issue with and refusing to power on to prevent damage to the MB and Components connected

Of course it could be just really bad luck your Current PSU is not powerful Enough and Both XFX PSU's are DOA

Can you test an XFX PSU in your Friend PC?

You could Also Disconnect Everything but the Bare Minimum from the MB to Test the XFX psu (unplug everything expect CPU, 1 Ram Plug in power and Power switch to case)

Did you assemble the PC yourself (checking Toms trouble shooting list posted earlier refer 3/15/18) USB Plugs
