Hello my Brothers in Tom's world.
My company bought out a company thru an auction and among the many fine junk was a Dell Power Edge 2900 with windows server 2003 .We are using windows server 2012.
Our offices in Houston could use a server but not with 2003.
Is there any way to wipe this 2900 and install at least 2008 if not 2013 ?
I'm sure I'll have to buy new cals ( if I can find them ) for the 2008. I already have the software for 2008. Will the two servers be able to talk to each other?
Is it even possible to format that 2003 and still use it. Just wondering because this Power Edge is just sitting on my bench like a very heavy paper weight.

Look up the requirements for Server2008. Does that machine meet it?

If so, purchase OS+CALs and install.
If not, you have a large, badly performing, frisbee.

I think I have put Server 2008 on a PE 2900 before. It might be a stretch to get Server 2012 on there.

Also, I thought I remember something about downgrading the forest function level(2012 down to 2008) in order for many services to work. What would be the function of this server in your LAN?

I guess I was mostly wondering.....I really don't need any of the info on the 2900, I thought about just rebuilding it in 2008 form.

Anybody need 2900 cheep????????

It is so hard to move a PE 2900. You practically have to give them away to be honest. I was going to say... if you are looking for a couple more, let me know =)

They need to be tricked out on RAM and even then you feel like you are being ripped off when you see the offer price come in.
