LAN limited to 10Mbps

Yesterday I finally got around to installing a 50ft Cat6 ethernet cable from my upstairs computer to my router in the basement. The issue is my computer is limiting the connection to 10Mbps instead of allowing 100 or 1000Mbps like it should be able to. This limits my actually internet speed tests to 9.5MB/s (on speedtest.net) when it should be around 60. When I change the adapter setting to gigabit it disconnects me for a second before saying there is no cable plugged in the ethernet jack. This is fixed when I change it back to something lower.

I am using a Asrock z77 Pro3 mobo which does have gigabit LAN and I have tested the wire by connecting it to my laptop which works perfectly fine at 100Mbps. I also downloaded the newest Realtek adapter drivers but nothing works.

I attempted to disable a VirtualBox device and even trying to uninstall it but it seemed to have no effect.

Does any one have an idea what the issue could be?

9/10 its the cable... Seems like that cable and your ASRock don't like each other

Just double checking that it connecting at 10Mbs not 10Gbs ;P

Maybe a shorter cable or different bank may be more compatible.

Understanding Megabytes and Megabits

Megabytes per second as displayed by copying files in explorer and Mega-Bits per seconds as your Network adapter shows 10/100/1000
Refer http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Megabit

Most older Switches and even new Routers/modems are still using 10/100 technology meaning you get limited to that speed even if your Motherboard is 1000

Deceptive as it sounds its just the Technology so your Lan devices Hub/Switch/Modem/etc are limited to it max speed of...
10 mbps = 1.25 megabytes a second
100 mbps = 12.5 megabytes per second
1000 mbps = 125 megabytes per second

It was a commercial cable. Not the best one available but I bought it a while back on a budget. Seeing good speeds while the wire is connected to a laptop makes me believe it isn't the cable.

The Router/modem is a Ubee DVW326 which does have 1000 LAN connections. Other devices do not have this issue.

That in a way is unfortunate since it is now something harder to find. When a cable is marginal it will work in some devices but not others and get random results. Commercial cables are all tested by the factory.

maybe the computer all the way upstairs and connect with a different cable to the same router port. This will pretty much say it is something about the cable rather than some setting. Actual cable problems are very hard to find without a meter called a TDR which is very expensive. All you can do is look for any form of damage

Well with the Cable testing ok on your laptop and with connection speed of 100 with no issues

Can you other Asrock PC connect at just 100 speed also? (as apposed to 1000)

Latest driver shows Ver 8.xxx on both Asrock and Realtek

Are you using the Xfast Lan Software?
If No - Try It
If Yes - try disabling it - or selecting other options with it some of these tweeks that lower ping can slow overall traffic speed on a lan down in priority of gaming ping.

In the Actual Network Adapter Properties - un tick "QoS Packet Scheduler"

I unticked the QoS and the Ver 8.xxx drivers are for Windows 8 while I am on 7 (forgot to mention that in OP)

Does using a shorter different Cable also Cause or have the same issue?

IE Connect locally to the device with a 1 or 2 meter cable that came with your modem.

First lets Determine that your ASRock is Working fine and Can definitely achieve full capacity in its network

A Combination of your devices and Extended long Cables lowering Voltage on the Lan causing your ASRock only to detect and want to connect at a lower speeds is a likely possibility

It shoud not be an issue at 50 feet... more info on cable lingth http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/22511-42-cable-long-quot-long-quot

I hooked my computer up to a working cable and it came up as a gigabit connection so that made me think it's the cable. Just to double check I dragged another computer (instead of a laptop this time) upstairs to check the cable in question. Came up as gigabit. My computer is the only one getting stuck at 10Mbps and the cable works on every other machine.

I'll try to install the files off the CD given to me and see if that helps at all.
