Hey guys, i fresh installed windows xp on my HP computer and im not sure how i can connect to the internet with Ethernet plugged in, does windows XP fresh not come with ethernet drivers? when i plug it in, i get no notifications like windows 7, i go to device manager and i dont see any network drivers, i do see "Ethernet controller" with a big yellow question mark, i checked its properties and said i need to re-install drivers but it then tells me to connect to the internet, i checked HPs website for drivers under network (with the specific model of the computer) and all i see are international drivers, and nothing that sounds like Ethernet drivers.

What is the EXACT model number of your computer? If you have an aftermarket add in card we'll need the model number of that, but if it's integrated with the motherboard then just the computer model should be fine. It might help to have the model number of the motherboard, which should be printed somewhere on the motherboard itself.

its a HP Compaq DC5700 (it says DC5700S but i dont know if the S has to do with its model but its a shot) like i said i have tried looking for the exact model number network drivers with no luck,

Since we don't know WHICH of the possible network adapters you have, try this driver first:

http://h20566.www2.hp.com/portal/site/hpsc/template.PAGE/public/psi/swdDetails/?sp4ts.oid=3249662&spf_p.tpst=swdMain&spf_p.prp_swdMain=wsrp-navigationalState%3Didx%253D%257CswItem%253Dvc_107236_1%257CswEnvOID%253D1098%257CitemLocale%253D%257CswLang%253D%257Cmode%253D%257Caction%253DdriverDocument&javax.portlet.begCacheTok=com.vignette.cachetoken&javax.portlet.endCacheTok=com.vignette.cachetoken

And if that doesn't work, try this driver:

http://h20566.www2.hp.com/portal/site/hpsc/template.PAGE/public/psi/swdDetails/?sp4ts.oid=3249662&spf_p.tpst=swdMain&spf_p.prp_swdMain=wsrp-navigationalState%3Didx%253D%257CswItem%253Dir_66362_1%257CswEnvOID%253D1098%257CitemLocale%253D%257CswLang%253D%257Cmode%253D%257Caction%253DdriverDocument&javax.portlet.begCacheTok=com.vignette.cachetoken&javax.portlet.endCacheTok=com.vignette.cachetoken

And if that's not the correct one, it must be this one:

http://h20566.www2.hp.com/portal/site/hpsc/template.PAGE/public/psi/swdDetails/?sp4ts.oid=3249662&spf_p.tpst=swdMain&spf_p.prp_swdMain=wsrp-navigationalState%3Didx%253D%257CswItem%253Dir_68185_2%257CswEnvOID%253D1098%257CitemLocale%253D%257CswLang%253D%257Cmode%253D%257Caction%253DdriverDocument&javax.portlet.begCacheTok=com.vignette.cachetoken&javax.portlet.endCacheTok=com.vignette.cachetoken

In answer to your question, no, XP does NOT natively support as wide a variety of hardware as windows 7 does. Much of the available hardware on windows xp had to be manually installed. You can find the rest of the drivers for your system here in case you need any of them:
