If you can play with Legos and make something out of the blocks....I think you can build a computer. It isn't that tough - there are quite a few videos on youtube....

There aren't that many components to assemble - it just takes patience and following instructions. The most difficult part is matching up some of the connectors (i.e. front panel to mobo) where you have to read the case's manual to understand their cable, and the mobo's manual to understand where to place the cable.

If you want to get ripped off by buying a prebuilt, feel free to do so.
If you want to get WAY BETTER performance, build your own.
This video is more up-to-date than the last one:

Can you read, follow directions, and use a phillips screwdriver? If yes, to all three, then you can build your own. Building your own allows you to build how you want, make it upgradeable, and you will get better quality components as well. Each part comes with its own individual warranty as well. :D

What do you want to do with the PC and how comfortable are you using simple hand tools?

If you want something to browse the web and maybe a flash game or two - buy a dell/acer/etc as you cannot put together a system as cheaply as they can.

If you want to get a good gaming (or photoshop/heavy rendering) system for the lowest price possible - then building your own is great value for the $.

If you cannot remember how to tighten/remove a screw and have previously forced a USB plug into a FireWire port because they look similar - Don't try and build one.
