nVidia Quadro vs GTX

It seems as though this has been asked before, but I don't think there was ever a good answer. So here goes again:

Which would be better overall for Adobe Premiere Pro CC video editing, a Quadro or GTX?

I am a professional video editor. Here's what I am working with now:

12 core Mac Pro (2x 6 core Xeon)
28 GB of RAM
120GB SSD
6 TB RAID 0 Storage (3x 2 TB HDDs)
nVidia Quadro 4000 for Mac

I have been researching this topic for several hours now and I am still unsure which is better.

My thoughts right now are that I already have a Quadro, and it works pretty well. I can output broadcast quality 30 second spots in about 1 minute. But when I look at Newegg and see GTX cards for about $400-500, all with specs far greater than my Quadro, and far cheaper than a Quadro 5000 or 6000, I can't help but wonder if I wouldn't get a worthwhile performance increase with a GTX.

Let's just say for now that money isn't an object. Which card would I put in my Mac? Would a GTX 9xx be loads better than my Quadro? I do at times have as many as 8 layers of nearly uncompressed HD video and graphics up at once, and playback will begin to chug with that much.

So the bottom line for me is that it is well worth the $400-500 of a GTX card to be able to do everything almost instantly. Playback and encoding. But it is not worth it if I won't even notice the increase.

Thanks for reading the long post and hope to hear from y'all soon!

Performance in video editing will likely be the same, but you'll notice a huge step up in gaming.

The good news about your power supply situation is that you can buy a high quality, lower power (4-500 watt) for super cheap.

A Quadro is overkill for video editing.

Any GTX 9-series would do work.

Quadro cards are meant for things like CAD and 3D rendering. Their specific purpose is for the best accuracy of 3D objects. If you do either of those, and money is no matter, the Quadro would be best.

For video editing, a GTX 9 series would be more than enough.

Primarily video editing. Gaming would be a nice side benefit, but I am not going to make a decision based on gaming. Through some more research I have determined that if I want to use a GTX I will need to have another power supply. And since Apple uses something other than the normal 24 pin connector I will have to have a second power supply, rather than replace the stock power supply with something better.

If I can figure out the power issue, I might just buy a GTX 970 or 980 and give it a try.

It's looking like the 970/980 don't work in Mavericks quite yet. Those cards would be perfect though as they draw less power and would not require a separate power supply to run. Thanks for all your help!
