I bought a new motherboard, GA z87 hd3 and a cpu, i5 4460, and the guys at the store flashed the bios of the mobo and inserted the cpu. Then I bought a corsair 430w modular psu and at home I installed that into my old case, along with the motherboard. I removed a couple of standoffs as the motherboard was smaller than the previous one. I plugged in the 8 pin power for the cpu and the 20+4 atx one. Then I plugged in a SATA drive with power, the two case fans into molex connectors, then I plugged in four sticks of 4gb ddr3 ram and my nvidia graphics card. Then the front panel headers for the power button etc.

It wouldn't start so I removed the graphics card, still wouldn't start; removed ram one by one, still nothing, changed the front panel headers around and one stick of ram and it would start, but then stop about 30 seconds later with a beep. Then restart again.

I tried moving around ram, now it won't start at all. When I power it on the psu fan moves around one single rotation, nothing on the motherboard starts, not the case fans or cpu.

Not sure what to do at this point, any help would be appreciated.

Have you tried jumpstarting just the PSU?

No... I'm afraid I'm not really comfortable doing that myself. I have a fear of getting shocked by electricity.

I can take the PSU back to the store I bought it from on Monday and ask them to verify that it works for me. Do you have any other suggestions that I can try myself?

try ruling out a short in your rig. take the power supply and mb out of the pc and try starting it on top of your mb box. the mb has onboard video so use the video port of the mb and see if with one dimm it posts. was the new cpu in the mb at the store and it posted fine???

Sorry I had to go to bed, it was late here (Australia). The PC is powering on now, one stick of ram, no video card.

So the motherboard has a few standoffs on it but not enough in my opinion, because one whole side of the board feels unsupported, and I double-checked the cpu power connector and the atx mobo connector and found that the 20 + 4 pin power connector wasn't in properly. It was in but not until both sides had clicked. It's tricky because I felt like if I pushed too hard to get it in I was gonna crack the board. But the plug is in now and it's powering on.

Thanks a lot for your replies I really appreciate your help =)

if your afraid of the mb shorting out to the mb tray look online or if you have a local electrical parts store see if they carry rubber spacers that have glue side that you can glue to the mb tray. if not look at hardware store for rubber feet.
