SSDs operate exactly like hard drives - only faster.
Data in most cases are not saved automatically - if, for instance, you work with an Excel spreadsheet, then if you do not save the data, regardless of whether you work off a hard drive or an SSD, your work between loading the file and hte crash will be lost. If you do save, only the work between the save and the crash will be lost.
