I want to change one of three antenna to a directional on a D-Link DIR 835 router

Solution
I suspect this is why you see fewer and fewer routers with external antenna. They do work if you don't mess with their antenna.

MiMO is a topic that almost looks like it is magic that they can accomplish this. It is extremely dependent on the antenna spacing and the output power of the antenna. I suspect if you had enough math skills you could figure out exactly what combination of db on antenna would work

Directional antenna of course completely mess that up since you only have a one signal. I have seen some directional antenna that have 2 antenna built into the same antenna but never 3.

How mimo actually works is way above my knowledge I just have a basic understanding of it.
Yes you can buy aftermarket antennas for better signal.

They range from simple omni-directional antennas to overkill directional ones like a cantenna.

Just make sure you get one for the wifi band (2.4Ghz or 5Ghz) you are using, and that it fits your router's antenna socket.

I see we have 2 threads.

I will copy my post from the other

The first router you posted the answer would be yes because it only uses a signal antenna at a time.

The new routers that can do mimo (ie 300m or 450m) use all the antenna simultaneously. You CAN put a different antenna on these but you likely will break the mimo feature. It will unlikely be able to figure out how to combine the signals and you will be limited to 150m. Used to be my favorite trick to put bigger antenna on a router now you make any changes at all and you run the risk of actually degrading your speed.

Still doing what you want will work the router is smart enough to only use a single antenna without the mimo features without you having to configure anything.

Bill001g, Thanks for the response. I would have thought that the manufacturers would assure that their products work before selling them to the public. Sorry for the RANT.

I will do some more research on antenna since I don't fully understand how they function in the router
