IDE not recognized on Dell Dimension 4700 after installing XP Service Pack 3

I inherited an old Windows XP machine that was on Service Pack 2. After installing Service Pack 3, my 2nd harddrive (that stores just media) and DVDRom drive are no longer recognized by the BIOS. I verified they were still getting power and I swapped out the IDE ribbon for two others to see if the cable had died, but still I can't see them. I also plugged the HDD into another PC and was able to access it no problem. The IDE ribbon was linking first to the HDD and then finally on the DVDRom.

Has anyone heard of something like this happening when after installing a Service Pack? I have to assume the IDE connection on the motherboard is what is causing the issue since both the HDD and DVDRom drive work fine on other systems but I have heard that is very rare.

What are my options moving forward? I could get an IDE-to-SATA adapter for the HDD but that still leaves my DVDRom unavailable. Plus, I would continue to get a Disk Boot Failure every time I turn on the machine.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Stop using Windows XP connected to the internet; highly vulnerable to virus attacks. If you need to continue using the XP computer, disconnect the internet connection.

Regarding the HDD, yes you may use an adapter after verifying that the old Dell motherboard has an available SATA connector. To avaoid the disk boot failure enter the BIOS and make the HDD that contains the OS the first boot device. Dell Dimension 4700 generally came with a CD drive; not a DVD drive.

It's not connected to the internet for exactly that reason, but it may have been before so a virus could be the culprit.

As for the BIOS boot failure, I've already taken that step in making the SATA drive the first boot device but the Disk Boot Failure still persists. General weirdness is happening. Maybe this is the beginning of the end for this mobo...
