Upgrade from gtx 770

Hi all,

I have an i5 4670k at 4.0ghz, 8gb corsair (vengeance) 1600mhz ram and a Gigabyte gtx 770 2gb gpu. I am thinking of upgrading the gpu for more vram and better performance. Options I see are 780ti, 970 and 980. I am edging towards a 970. I game on a 1080p lcd tv. I think the 980 may be overkill though I am looking to buy an oculus rift consumer edition. However, I think it's too early to worry about rift's requirements since its still in development and could be a while before its release. Perhaps nvidia's next gpu series will be best for rift anyhow.

Alternatively I just stick with the 770, though the 2gb vram seems a bit less. I suppose it all depends on the games and their requirements. Watchdogs was demanding on the 770. Evil within requires 4gb vram for optimal performance. Wonder how many of the new releases this year will require more vram.

Thanks for your opinions.

Regards

Agree with the guys that answered before, get the 970. I got one myself last week and it's A-W-E-S-O-M-E. Fans stop spinning when idling and generally noise/heat is very low. Power consumption is very low as well and performance is great.
Some of my results:

Watch Dogs 1080P Ultra with AA: 65-70 FPS
Metro Last Light 1080P Very High without AA: 55-60 FPS
Tomb Raider 1080P Ultra without AA: 65-70 FPS

Get the MSI GTX 970 TwinFrozr V Gaming or Asus STRIX DirectCU II OC and you're set. Avoid EVGA models.

I got an i5 4690k, Corsair Vengeance 8gb and a 970 and I get 80-120fps on BF4 Ultra, 50-60 on ArmA 3 on ultra aswell. 970 is an awesome card and I plan to SLI in the near future.

Thanks. Aren't there complaints about the MSI? Something about an error return when fans run at 100%? What about the gigabyte 970? But yes I've heard these 3 brands are the way to go. Got my eyes on an Asus one for £275...

I got the MSI 970 and I will legit rev the fans up to 100% right now. Yup, all good. No error message and I can barely hear the fans going. This card is awesome but beware of sag, I get a little bit of sag but nothing bad.

Ok, here's the story on the MSI fan issue:

https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=183618.0

Here is the official word from an MSI admin:

We discussed this internally and the fan issue (fan2 @100%) is most likely caused by the sticker. Many fans can withstand the removal of the sticker without any damage but a small amount of fans seem to get damaged. Our production has already stopped using these stickers. So we recommend all users that suffer from this issue to return the card to the point of purchase for warranty service.

The word "some" here is important since it means, like with every new piece of electronic equipment you(the user) are likely to have problems that never appeared before during the testing and evaluation stage that was conducted by the manufacturer. That's the risk of getting something new e.g a GPU that just been released. You risk having problems, but if you want to see a difference in performance and want to go with a GeForce card it's more wise to go with a GTX 970. My opinion is just pick the ASUS STRIX GTX 970 DirectCU II OC or whatever it's called. It doesn't necessarily mean that if you get the MSI one you'll have problems. The card might be ok and run fine or it might be DOA. It's up to you to decide, you can still wait for a month to see if any other problems roll out from particular models.

^Thanks for your input. The problem with the MSI card is the sticker on the affected fan. MSI recommends removing the sticker (for those with the issue) or returning for a fix. The some are those that damage the fan upon the sticker removal. MSI has stopped adding the sticker but I guess it could take a few batches before the card comes sticker less. Does your card have one do you know?

Thanks! BTW, did you notice any coil whine with your gpu at normal/idle speed? Reading reports of people returning their cards due to it :/ TBH, I game with my headphones on anyway, so I most likely wouldn't hear it even if there was a whine.

No I did not at all. No coil whine and I myself game with headphones. The only time I THINK I heard coil whine was when I was on CSGO and I was getting 300+ FPS. And also, my card runs at 1380 mhz! These cards are beasts.
