Hey guys, I wanted to see how others were doing with the i5 4690k at stock speeds with an h80i. At idle with a few programs open like TS, steam I get 29c and I ran intel burn test and maxed out at 71c. Is that OK temperatures for a 4690k at stock?

Solution
Yes, idle temps are fine, stress test are okish too. A bit on the warm side are the stress temps, but completely in safe limits. I'd say you can go ahead with OCing the CPU.

Alright man, thanks for the answer. Was a bit concerned with OCing when the stress test temps seemed a bit high. Thanks again.

Any cpu cooler should be able to deliver 10-15c. over ambient.
I think you are good.
Max load temp is on the order of 100c.
so you are good there too.

I use OCCT to stress test.
It will shut down the test if your temps reach 85c.
Gradually increase the multiplier from 34 to whatever.
Monitor the vcore.

I have become a bit jaded on the subject of haswell cooling for overclocking.
How high you can OC is firstly determined by your luck in the bin lottery.
I had high expectations from the Devil's canyon parts and their better thermals.
I found out that the thermals really do not matter unless, perhaps, you are a competitive overclocker.
Haswell runs quite cool, that is, until you raise the voltage past 1.25v or so.
Once you go past 1.3v, then you really do need very good cooling to keep stress loads under say 85c.
But, the consensus is that voltages higher than 1.30 are not a good thing for 24/7 usage.
I have been unable to find any official Intel recommendation on what is a safe vcore limit.
If you are an enthusiast, you can go higher.
Even if you can handle the heat, how much do you really need that extra multiplier from say 4.4 to 4.6?

So, just clicked the OC genie button in bios, saved and restarted. Began intel burn test and got 96c in about 6 seconds. I think the CPU voltage may be a bit high. Believe it was at about 1.25.
